Warning: The following contains spoilers for 100 Girlfriends, Season 2, Episode 2, “Begins! Heats Up! Concludes! Food Fight Festival”, now streaming onCrunchyroll.

Now that Rentarou and Kurumi are dating, you know how this episode of100 Girlfriendswill go. As with the first season, the episode afterhe gains a girlfriendis all about fleshing out the new girlfriend’s character. For100 Girlfriendsseason 2, episode 2, “Begins! Heats Up! Concludes! Food Fight Festival”, Kurumi’s character development occurs in a food-eating contest.

Episode 2 is full of meta fourth-wall-breaking humor and absurd plotlines, as usual. Surprisingly though, this is one of the less raunchy episodes of100 Girlfriends. There are still a couple of scenes with Hakari, because of course there are, but for the most part, the episode concentrates on the food fight fun andKurumi realizing the importanceof relying on others, which is a nice change of pace.

Stomach of the Tiger

Episode 2 isn’t split into two parts like a lot of theother100 Girlfriendsepisodesare. Instead, pretty much the entire episode takes place in the food-eating contest. Kurumi, being the bottomless pit that she is, chose to participate in every event, while the rest of Rentarou Family will only be participating in one event each. Some recurring characters from season 1 come back for this episode. The Gorilla Alliance from the bouquet tossing event in100 Girlfriendsseason 1, episode 9, “The Holy War of Love and Soul”, also participated in the contest, which definitelyadds some spice tothe episode.

Overall, the food-eating contest was certainly a fun watch. The show being what it is, there were a lot of insane yet somehow smart logical loops to make each girl good at their respective event. Kusuri was resistant to spicy food because of all the chemicals she consumes, and Eiai put herself in a life-or-death situation just to be a more efficient eater. They were all crazy situations, but ones that made sense for each character. It’s not just Rentarou Family either, asthe contest was filledwith weird, wacky fun like a robot contestant and an announcer who’s extremely lewd for no apparent reason.

Fun Fact: Rentarou Family’s main opponent in the contest, Chanko Bakunishiki, has been altered for the anime release. In the manga, their opponent is Takeko Superdeluxe, whose name and appearance are parodies of Japanese celebrity Matsuko Deluxe. The name and appearance were likely changed for the anime to avoid any potential lawsuits. In classic100 Girlfriendsfashion, Rentarou even mentions that Chanko is different from his manga counterpart, a nice way toadd some new humorexclusive to the anime.

In More Ways Than One Probably

The whole point of the entire episode was for Kurumi to soften up and trust Rentarou and his other girlfriends. During the final contest, Kurumi and Chanko were neck and neck. However, Kurumi realized that competing in every event was a mistake because she didn’t have enough room in her stomach to beat Chanko now. Then, just when it looked like all hope was lost, Rentarou andthe rest of the girlsjoined in to help Kurumi. Seeing them continue to eat even when they were about to burst made Kurumi realize just how much they cared for her, finally accepting help from other people.

“Teamwork? Love? Those are meaningless in an eating contest! The old me would’ve dismissed their words that way. But now I know that they’re not meaningless. After all, them being here is making me want to fight again!” - Kurumi after seeing Rentarou and the girls help her win

The end of the episode has Rentarou and Kurumi meeting up after the contest. Kurmi thanks Rentarou for everything he has done, and theyshare their first kiss. She even got the reverse effect of her word association situation, where she now thinks of kissing Rentarou whenever she sees or hears the word “broth”. Weird and cute; perfectly in line with the rest of the show.

Kurumi’s Character

Kurumi really does have some glaring similarities to Karane, which is both a blessing and a curse. The downside is that their similarity sometimes does make it feel like one of them is redundant to the show. But it can’t be helped. If Rentarou isreally going to have 100 girlfriends, then some of them areboundto have similar personalities.

It’s a blessing, however, because, while they are similar, Kurumi provides some scenarios that wouldn’t normally happen with Karane. Kurumi takes the grumpiness level to an eleven and shows viewers how Rentarou would handle some as anti-social as her. Karane is also often grumpy, but it’s not really used in a way that puts her and the rest of the castin conflict with one another.

But now that Kurumi is getting along better with Rentarou and the rest of the girls, the next episode will almost surely introduce Rentarou’s next soulmate.
