Summary
Astro Bothas officially claimed the throne as the most awarded platforming game of all time. WhileAstro Bot’sGame of the Year victory at The Game Awards 2024 was more than enough to cement it as an exceptional title, the Team Asobi platformer now has another astonishing achievement under its belt.
Announced in May 2024,Astro Botinstantly seemed like the type of game fans of the franchise had been asking for: a much-expanded version of the PS5’s hugely-popularAstro’s Playroomtech demo with a heaping dose of additional PlayStation-related cameos. While Sony didn’t quite seeAstro Botas atentpole title for the PS5, the platformer defied all expectations when it launched in September 2024.Astro Botquickly became the highest-rated new game release of 2024, and subsequent months saw the game accrue even more glory.

During last month’s The Game Awards 2024 ceremony,Astro Botpicked up a plethora of accoladesand ended the night with a bang by taking home the coveted Game of the Year award. Many assumed this would be the pinnacle ofAstro Bot’s winning streak, but a recent discovery proves otherwise. Twitter user NextGenPlayer pointed out in a recent tweet thatAstro Bothas received 104 Game of the Year awards so far, granting it the status of most awarded platformer in history. The information comes courtesy ofgamefa.com’s Game of the Year Award Tracker, where similar statistics can be viewed for previous winners as well.
Astro Bot Snags 104 Game of the Year Wins, Becomes Most Awarded Platformer of All Time
The last record holder for most awarded platformer was Hazelight Studios’It Takes Two, which also won Game of the Year back in 2021.Astro Bothas dethronedIt Takes Twoby a substantial margin of 16 awards, and this lead may expand down the line. However, the prospect ofAstro Bot’s award tallies matching heavy hitters likeBaldur’s Gate 3,Elden Ring, andThe Last of Us Part 2seems quite unlikely.Baldur’s Gate 3andThe Last of Us Part 2currently stand at 288 and 326 Game of the Year wins respectively, andElden Ringmaintains its record as the most awarded game everwith a staggering 435 Game of the Year nabs.
Still, there’s no denyingAstro Bothas turned out immensely successful for both Team Asobi and Sony. On the commercial front,Astro Botsurpassed 1.5 million copies soldas of November 2024, which isn’t all that bad considering the game was created by less than 70 developers in a three-year timeframe and likely required a moderate budget. IfAstro Botwasn’t a major PlayStation franchise before, it almost certainly is now.
