Summary
When A24 has a newhorrormovie coming out, I’m interested right away. Some of the best releases from the production company includethe shocking Ari Aster filmHereditary, the creepy and atmosphericThe Witch, and the memorableMidsommar.Recently, the company releasedY2K, Kyle Mooney’s millennium story that blends horror and comedy. I love all these movies but am particularly excited aboutOpus, the upcoming A24 horror movie starring Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich. The cast also includes Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis, Tony Hale, and Amber Midthunder.
I’ve beena big fan ofEdebiri ever since I first saw her play Sydney AdamuonThe Bear. Edebiri’s performance has so many layers as Sydney does her best to deal with Carmy’s (Jeremy Allen White) moods and overly confident personality while chasing her own dreams. I’m looking forward to seeing this beloved actress as one of the two main characters inOpus.

Here’s Why I’m Excited About Ayo Edebiri’s A24 Horror Movie Opus
Inthe new A24 horror movieOpus, Edebiri playsAriel, a writer who goes to see a pop singer named Alfred Moretti (Malkovich) who disappeared for three decades but is now back. The trailer says “There’s no cult like celebrity” and as Ariel spends more time with Moretti and the people surrounding him, it becomes clear that he’s running a cult. She becomes increasingly worried and freaked out, and audiences can guess she’ll have to save herself before time runs out.
I’m excited forOpusbecauseI can’t wait to see Edebiri explore the horror genre. Edebiri gave a particularly strong performance inThe Bearseason 3, one ofthe best TV shows of 2024. Sidney’s personal and professional lives got more complex and it was a joy watching the actress dive more into her wants, needs, hopes, dreams, and big questions about life. I know she’ll do an incredible job as a determined, passionate, and ambitious journalist who wants to solve the mystery of where a pop star has been for the past 30 years. Edebiri has starred in comedies and dramas before, butOpusis the first time she is starring in a horror movie, and I think that’s cool.
I also love the premise ofOpusand am intrigued by a pop star running a cult. It’s fun when the horror genre explores the pop music industry, like the main character inSmile 2,which horror fans can check out at home. While I love slashers likeScreamandI Know What You Did Last Summer(and look forward to seeingScream 7andthe legacyIKWYDLSsequel), I like it when a horror movie tells a story that hasn’t been done before. Reboots and sequels are nostalgic fun, butOpusis an original chilling tale, and that’s what the genre needs.
Most of all, I like thatA24 horror movies are as surprising as they are entertaining. They have strong performances from some of the best actors, and they have unique premises like two elderly villains hunting downactors working on an adult movie like inXor the pop star cult inOpus. With so many horror movies being released all the time, I like that A24 consistently releases well-done movies that are smart and unexpected.
