In a world where supervillains run rampant and heroes fight them in larger-than-life bouts that (most likely) end up with lots of collateral damage, this powerless hero emerges to become a notorious obstacle for both heroes and villains.
What began as a hobby quickly turns into his path in life, and with the stakes going higher and higher, Masayoshi has to put his heart and soul into the fight or die trying. Since he has no superpowers, he uses a ridiculous mixture of gadgets, lame poses, and strange catchphrases that are the very antithesis of superhero wisecrackers. As the story progresses, more and more villains appear, and Masayoshi turns out to be the hero nobody asked for, but that they most definitely needed. Good times.
This crazy story starts with a world-domination enterprise named Kisaragi sending his “best” combatant to take over another world. A forced isekai from the get-go, since they literally break in (first offense) into another world, and fall into the classic Kingdom versus the Demon Lord trope as a third wheel, trying to outmaneuver both and conquer the world themselves. So, it is not about heroes here, but villains repeatedly committing wicked, heinous, andillegal actions to earn pointsand buy more weapons to keep committing crimes against mankind and demonkind as well.
The series uses that characteristic zany humor from the author ofKonoSubaand walks the edge of what can be considered technically illegal to make fun of. Unapologetic, brutal, and sometimes even cruel: Combatant N6 and his supervisor, Alice the Android, are a wrecking ball full of classic gags and satirical dark humor.
A main character that cannot help but bethe rawest and most cynical isekai protagonist, a nearly useless magician who is wanted for arson in several kingdoms, an airhead Goddess who is not even recognized by her crazy followers, and a Paladin with masochistic tendencies. This might sound like the average lineup in aD&Dhomebrew one-shot, but it’s one of the most popular fantasy anime series and its peak satirical comedy.
Natsume Akatsuki’s humor has been the main attraction of his two flagship series ever since they started to run, and in this, his “magnum opus,” he makes use and abuse of it until fans are breaking their ribs with laughter. Truth be told,KonoSuba’ssense of humor is not for everybody, and some might consider it a little bit “too much,” but for those who are there just to have a good laugh and can put up with some little fan service, it’s a great show.
Sora and Shiro are quite a troublesome duo: both of them are extremely intelligent, and they most definitely have a low grade of empathy, and their goals are not entirely altruistic. Everything happening in between is not the typical isekai anime where heroes go on a quest to save the world. Much like what happens inThe Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World,the inhabitants of that world got more than they had bargained for when these siblings were isekai’d into their realm. Good laughs abound, but obscure and twisted situations are also part of the fun in this anime.
WatchingGintamais entering headstrong into a world of comedy unlike most fans have ever seen. It is disguised as an action series, set in an alternate reality that mixes aliens, yokai, and other strange beings, where a group of freelancers work together doing odd jobs, most of which end up being of shady nature. A powerhouse in both comedy and animation,Gintamahas a humongous fanbase that loves to talk about themany unresolved mysteries on the show.
But if fans want to get really into it, they should watch it with a pinch of salt. This episodic comedy balances out satire and light situational humor with an emphasis on cultural references that might be hard to understand for those not acquainted with Japanese gags. Still, it is a great alternative to most comedy shows that often cross the line with their scatological humor or senseless fan service.
