Companionborrows from some tropes in the horror genre, but it’s also a unique take on the future of dating. Josh is dating a robot named Iris who actually doesn’t know that she is one. After a lovely retreat in the woods, things go haywire and this romantic film turns into a horror disaster.
Horror fans come to movies for two things: scares and kills. WhileCompaniondoesn’t have the most grotesque murders in recent memory,look toAbigailorSmile 2for that, it does have quite a few memorable ones. So, let’s go through some of the best with spoilers ranked by the gruesomeness.
6Kat
Knife To The Back
Kat certainly has one of the most painful and surprising deaths in the movie. After witnessing or being involved in multiple deaths, including an officer, Kat has had enough with Josh. She’s taking her share of the money and getting out of Dodge before things escalate further.
Josh tries to stop her but Kat funnily reminds Josh that sheisn’t some dollhe can control. Unfortunately, he does have control of Patrick, another robot with a murderous rage. Aaa misinterprets “stop her” to mean stab Kat in the back. The audience never really sees what happens to her but it’s assumed she just bled out after being stabbed.
5Sid
Surprise Bullets
Toward the end of the movie, two Companion technicians, Sid and Teddy, come to hear Josh’s report. They also need to bring Iris back to the lab to reboot her and see what really went down. Josh had no idea that the hard drive was in Iris’ chest and that it was still recoverable.
Sweating the aftermath of his poor decisions, Josh sends Patrick outside to deal with the technicians. As the technicians are about to leave, they see Patrick, dressed up as Officer Hendrix, standing creepily in the driveway before killing Sid with a gun. It’s an average way to go ina horror moviebut the chase that ensues after is thrilling. Eli also gets a surprise bullet to the chest but it’s not that bad comparatively.
4Sergey
Rocked And Knifed
Sergey is the first kill of the movie which cascades into a grand number by the end credits. He’s not a great dude from minute one and it’s assumed he’s involvedwith the mafiato boot. That’s why it’s not that surprising when he tries to come onto Iris.
They have a scuffle, forcing Sergey to the ground where he cracks his skull open on a rock. He counterattacks by trying to choke Iris which is when she takes her knife and stabs it into Sergey’s neck. There’s a comical amount of blood from this wound, drenching Iris like she just came off of the set for the latestCarrieremake.
3Patrick
Taser To The Mouth
The trailers forCompanionseemingly give everything away in that Iris is a robot. That’s only the tip of the iceberg though as there are still plenty of surprises waiting for viewers. One happens not long after Sergey’s death when Eli reveals that his boyfriend, Patrick, isalso a robot.
Unlike Iris though, Patrick reveals to Eli later that he knows he’s a robot. The two genuinely seem to share a love connection too and even though Josh scrubs his data, Iris helps Patrick remember the love he had with Eli. Heartbroken at Eli’s loss, Patrick decides to kill himself via a taser to his mouth. While buckets of blood aren’t spilled, the idea is enough to make anyone gag.
2Josh
Wine Opener
Horror movies can sometimes go overboard on foreshadowing things to come. InCompanion, it’s apparent that someone is going to die via the wine opener, and of course that someone happens to be Josh. Of all the “villains” in the movie, he deserves themost horrific death.
He frames himself as a good guy but it’s clear by the end he’s anything but a good guy. When he thinks he has the upper hand over Iris, she surprises him with the wine opener to the head. Josh’s brain gets uncorked and he collapses just like he does with Iris earlier after they have a little roll in the hay.
1Officer Hendrix
Punched To A Bloody Pulp
This whole scene is masterfully done with suspense and comedy. After breaking free of Josh’s car, Iris gets pulled over by a cop. She knows she can’t lie, so she disguises her answers in German via the app on Josh’s phone.
She confesses to multiple murders but the cop, Officer Hendrix, has no idea what’s going on. In the background, viewers can see Patrick slowly come into frame and Iris is freaked out. She knows she’s inaTerminatormovienow and once Patrick does arrive on the scene, he punches Officer Hendrix’s face into a bloody pulp.
