Summary
Anime, like most other pieces of media is mostlycharacter driven. This means that a lot of people get invested in the characters, but not only that, but also the relationships of the characters. This leads to people desiring certain characters to end up with someone they like.
There are a lot of anime couples out there, but there are also characters who look like they should be couples, but for some reason or the other, the relationship never becomes canon. This frustrates people to no end, but could also sometimes be a lot of fun to watch their interactions.
Mild-mannered salaryman Rokurou Okajima, otherwise known as Rock, is kidnapped by the Lagoon Company, a band of ruthless criminals, and he eventually joins them.Rock’s personalitysometimes puts him at odds with the wild, hot-headed, pistol-totting Revy.
The two seem the furthest thing from a couple, but as Rock settles into life as a criminal, he and Revy have certainly shared some moments that can make one think there’s something there. There is the sharing a cigarette and how comfortable Revy seems around Rock. While there’s nothing official, some just think of them as a thing in their head.
Stark And Fern are two of Frieren’s closest companions onher journey in this masterful series. The story ofFrieren, who as an elf, isblessed with incredibly long life, was a smash hit in 2024, but more than Frieren’s cute personality and fantastic journey, people were invested in the burgeoning romance between Stark and Fern.
The two clearly seem to like each other as was evidenced by Fern’s annoyance when it seemed she wasn’t going to get a birthday gift from Stark, and that infamous dance scene. There is a possibility the two will eventually get together, but for now fans simply hope Stark doesn’t fall into the same trap as Himmel who also loved Frieren but couldn’t follow through.
Hyoukais an underrated anime from 2012 that shares a lot ofsimilarities to Oregairu, but leans a lot more into the mystery elements. One of the strongest points of the show is the characters who are a joy to experience. But of all the characters that get along well, none stand out as much as Oreki and Chitanda.
The cheerful Chitanda constantly talks Oreki’s ear off and always gets in his face with the other usually avoiding her gaze. But there is something there, something that has so far been unexplored, but they look perfect and theirs feels more like a case of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.
In the world ofSoul Eater, meisters wield Scythes(who are humans that transform into weapons) whose aim is to become a Death Scythe that can be wielded by Death himself. The connection between the meister and scythe is always deep and for Maka and Soul in particular, the two seem to care about each other a lot.
They share several tender moments and when they resonate, it is the most beautiful thing to see. As far as anyone knows, they are not a couple, but for many, they totally should be, especially considering Maka’s father is a Death Scythe that fell in love with his wielder.
The Flame Alchemist, Roy Mustang, is one of the coolest characters fromFullmetal Alchemistand one of the strongest warriors in the army. He is supported by his trusted Lieutenant, Riza Hawkeye, a strong fighter who also seems to be involved with Roy.
The two are never said to be in a relationship, even when both Edward and Alfonse are happily married, but they seem like an old couple every time they share a scene together (which is a lot). Riza understands Roy perfectly, and the Flame Alchemist will do anything to protect Riza.
Maou Sadao is the literal devil while Emilia is the hero who has been tasked to take him down. But stuck on earth with no way to return and forced to work regular jobs to make it, the two enemies find themselves having to rely on one another.
It is true that they are enemies, but the chemistry between Maou and Emilia is undeniable. It is such that even Chiho, who likes Maou, has wondered about what goes on between the two. They aren’t a canon relationship, but they seem to make perfect sense.
There are few implied relationships as frustrating as the one between Lucy Heartfilia and Natsu Dragneel inFairy Tail. The two have been together since the beginning of the series and go on just about every adventure together. Natsu is always over at Lucy’s and when she gets hurt, Natsu becomes terrifying.
But for some reason, they are yet to be canon. With Grey and Juvia becoming a thingand even Gajeel and Levy, having Natsu and Lucy continue to drag their feet can make a person tear their hair out. That said, they already have a ship name, NaLu, and everyone is just waiting for the two to go for it.
Eren would become the monster he used to fight against and would lead to atragic end, but what makes Eren’s story sad is that he had someone by his side the entire time— Mikasa.
The two have been together since childhood and their relationship seems like such a forgone conclusion that Armin seems like the third wheel. While never quite canon, it seemed beyond obvious that there was something there. Mikasa was devoted to Eren and while he never quite seemed to share the exact level of affection, he did care for Mikasa.
