Summary

TheSonic the Hedgehogmovies have had huge and ongoing success at the box office. Longtime fans of the franchise’s games, younger newcomers to the Blue Blur, and general cinema-going audiences have come together to support the efforts of this franchise to break the Hollywood curse regarding video game adaptations on the big screen.

Fortunately, theSonicfilms appear to show no sign of slowing down, and fans will likely get plenty more opportunities to witness great Sonic moments, of which there are already plenty. Sonic, a mouthy hero himself, and his surrounding friends, both human and other, have been the source of many highly memorable and quotable lines in the films thus far, which help make all theSonicmovies well worth revisiting.

Sonic’s Humor Shining In The First Film

It seemed at the time to be an unusual choice to create aSonicmovie that focused solely on Sonic and a freshly invented human sidekick working together against Robotnik, but it was actually a genius move. Establishing this version of Sonic as a big-screen star, with a cocky attitude and great sense of humor, allowed the franchise to ground itself before moving on to more characters from theSonicmythos, andthey’ve not stopped expanding yet.

Moments like this hilarious one were poking fun at current pop culture while showcasing what makes Sonic so great, even on his own. Ben Schwartz brought a hilarity to the character that some of the games are missing, and Tom was the perfect companion for his comedic style to bounce off, especially in the first film.

Jim Carrey Immediately Shining As Robotnik

Jim Carrey as Eggman was always going to be a smash hit idea, and the casting was proven right quite rapidly in the first film when Robotnik came to a head with Sonic and Tom. Tom’s response about being breastfed led Robotnik to say “Nice, rub that in my orphan face,” which extended this hilarious moment even further.

Carrey’s casting has been a huge highlight of all threeSonicmovies to date, and moments like this feature the sort of delivery that few people could makeas iconic as Jim Carrey. Though most of his quips are against Sonic, this moment with Tom was a great part of the first film, and it is fascinating to watch back and see how Carrey has just fallen further into the cartoonier sides of this role over time.

A Self-Aware And Hilarious Comment

Another hilarious moment that highlights one of the slightly bizarre elements ofSonicgames is when Sonic and Tom have a fearful experience in the first film, which is followed by Tom admitting that he’s worried, giving Sonic a chance to respond in this hilarious manner. Sonic, as well as most of his friends, doesn’t wear much by way of clothing in the games or films, and this self-aware comment was a great way to poke fun at this detail.

The firstSonicfilm is surprisingly re-watchable and quotable, and this is a prime example of the improvisational sort of comedic charm that Ben Schwartz has mastered over years of doing improv work. It resulted in the perfect sort of personality and sense of humor for Sonic, allowing him to stand out as a great character in his own right.

The Perfect Introduction To Knuckles

The introduction of Idris Elba as Knuckles was a massive win for theSonicfilms. It allowed for a great showdown between him and Sonic for the second film, delivered the premise for an excellent spin-off series, and left Knuckles as a hilarious extra member of Team Sonic for the third film, where he continued to shine asone of the bestSoniccharacters.

This was a spine-chilling quote that was spoken shortly after Knuckles was introduced, showcasing his strength and power as Sonic attempted (and failed) to fight him early on. Knuckles has incredible strength, and this was a brutal reminder to Sonic that he isn’t the only one with huge abilities. After being special and unique in the first film, Sonic was brought back down to Earth by this line and the subsequent beat down.

5“Being A Hero Isn’t About Taking Care Of Yourself; It’s About Taking Responsibility For Other People”

A Moment Of Heroic Wisdom

Despite having his struggles with overconfidence, going out alone, and trying to be the hero all the time, Sonic has still had some moments of true wisdom. Echoing other superheroes like Spider-Man a bit with this fantastic quote, Sonic summed up the experience of being a real hero for Knuckles as they began to turn towards working together.

Knuckles and Shadow have both now gone from working against Sonic to working alongside him, and the reason why is that the Blue Blur consistently finds the humanity and reason within others, and he is able to say just the right thing in situations like this to evoke the reaction that he desires. Sonic is a lot better with words and inspiration than it might seem off the bat, and this moment is infinitely quotable and proves he understands what it means to be a hero.

Knuckles Humor Coming To The Forefront Immediately

Knuckles seemed like a slightly amusing character even when he was attacking Sonic and acting asan intimidating and powerful villain. When he turned to Team Sonic and began helping them in their battle against Robotnik, it took no time at all for him to set himself up as the obvious comedic relief of the newly formed team.

While Tails attempted to lift Knuckles into battle and complained about his heaviness, Knuckles responded with this quote, producing the first of many true laugh-out-loud moments that the Echidna Warrior would unleash over the next three projects he appeared in for the franchise.

3“Stone, You Were More Than A Sycophant To Me; You Were A Syco-Friend”

Robotnik’s Full Circle Moment Of Friendship

Doctor Robotnik has been an incredible character throughout the threeSonicfilms so far, maybe even the most interesting of all the charactersthat have crossed over from the games. However, he has consistently proven himself to be evil by turning whenever given the opportunity. That is until the final act ofSonic The Hedgehog 3. During this moment, Robotnik decides he can’t let his grandfather destroy the Earth, and he stays behind on the ship to save everyone.

In a moment of genuine heartbreak, Robotnik says an emotional goodbye through a huge broadcasting screen to Agent Stone, his most loyal companion and friend. Saving him and the rest of the Earth was a final redemption for Robotnik, bringing his character full circle.

2“There Are No Winners In Revenge”

Sonic’s Most Growth-Filled Moment Yet

Sonic’s story in the third film is mostly about trying to work as a teammate instead of a lone wolf hero, and it is something that he struggles with. This gets worse when Tom is injured by Shadow, leaving Sonic filled with rage, so much so that he threatens Knuckles into giving him the location of the Master Emerald.

He fights Shadow angrily, but he can’t finish him off, and this comes down to him realizing that vengeance fixes nothing and that his rage had blinded him the same way that Shadow’s had. Sonic tells Shadow that there are no winners in revenge, giving Shadow the same kind of realization that Sonic gave Knuckles in the previous film.

Shadow’s Poignant Moment Of Realization

Keanu Reeves as Shadow was amassive highlight of the thirdSonicmovie. His villainous turn and rage-filled character was terrifying and impressive, making for some truly great scenes. He even manages to punch the master emerald out of Sonic, leading to a tense battle where they both have access to energy from the artifact.

However, after Sonic refuses to take vengeance on Shadow, the black hedgehog begins to wonder if his path is righteous and what his lost friend Maria would have wanted. Seeing a dead star still shining helps him with his realization that she is still in his heart and that, with her there, he can’t takethe sort of vengeance that Gerald Robotnik had encouragedhim towards. This was one of the very best moments in all of theSonicfilms, and this genuinely beautiful quote serves as the icing on the cake.
