The second episode ofBlue Exorcist: The Blue Night Sagais finally out, and it expands further on Shiro and Yuri’s early life. This episode also reveals a major truth about Mephisto and his experiments to create multiple clones of the Demon King in order to find a new host for Lucifer.
Shiro is also one of these clones, and during his confrontation with Mephisto, he demands to be made an Exwire. The plot thickens further this season, and one can’t help but praise the anime for its excellent scriptwriting this time. Paired with such clean and amazing animation, this is truly the peak ofBlue Exorcist.
The Truth Unveils
Shiro Challenges Mephisto
As the episode starts,Rin sees Shiroand Mephisto talking. Shiro wants to become an Exwire and gain his freedom, but he refuses to become a body clone for Lucifer. Once every 15 years, an Exwire would emerge from each subject group, and Shiro said that he fits that criteria.
Becoming an Exwire would mean that the experiments he gets will be reduced, and if he becomes a paladin, eventually, he will get all the money and power in the world. Shiro is adamant about not becoming a mere sacrifice in order to save humans.
However, Mephisto claims that becoming a Paladin does not mean that he would be free and that his life would be on the line as collateral. On top of that, the previous experiment subjects all died trying to become paladins, and even if he managed to become a paladin, he would be no less than a slave to the true order.
The Dark Truth That Asylum Hides
As the episode progresses further, Mephisto reveals to Rin that the Asylum, which is meant to be an orphanage that also trains orphans to be exorcists, is actually just a facade as it hides aresearch facility known as Section 13underneath. Section 13 is responsible for producing vessels for demon kings. SoMephisto has actually been an enemyall along, which makes it an absolutely insane plot twist. Mephisto goes on to explain that everything he did was to buy time for Lucifer, who is in very poor condition.
In the next portion of the episode, Rin and Mephisto visit Lucifer. Scientists are continuously working to keep Lord Lucifer alive, injecting all sorts of elixirs and drugs. Rin is extremely shocked upon learning that all of those monstrous experiments were just to keep Lucifer alive. But while the experiments were as crucial as they were, they were a necessary evil, because if Lucifer gets the perfect body he desires, no one can stop his wrath.
Mephisto reveals that countless clones have been made to be Lucifer’s vessels, but this has never worked out, and that is why they developed Elixirs that can give Lucifer immortality. However, getting these elixirs from the clones was an extremely painful procedure. Watching the amount of cruelty Shiro had to face was truly heartbreaking.
Yuri And Shiro Reunite
As Rin walks out of the door, he finds himself in the midst of an ongoing mission toexorcise a Demon. Here, we witness a fairly grown-up Yuri, who is beingtrained to become an Exorcist. The Exorcists and Exwires arrive, and Shiro is among them. When Yuri sees him, she quickly rushes to greet him but is heartlessly told off by Shiro to stay away.
As the Demon arrives, everyone starts trying to exercise him, but the star of the show turns out to be Shiro, who shows off his incredible skills and rushes alone to kill the Demon. Despite being so powerful, he is still extremely bad-tempered as he mercilessly kills the harmless little demons called Greenmen, which upsets Yuri a lot. As the episode concludes, we also see blue flames, which, if you remember from before, actually represent satan.
Yet Another Amazing Episode
This episode showcases how Shiro has always been a strong and capable individual. Even though he lived a terrible life, he still put a lot of effort into not ending up with the other clones. We also learned that while the experiments Mephisto did were absolutely inhumane, they were necessary to save the world.
The action sequence of the battle between Shiro and the Demon is executed beautifully, and the animation is as amazing as ever. The voice acting was also pretty great, especially Shiro’s voice actor, who did an incredible job of portraying Shiro’s bad temper and aggression.
