Summary

Bosch: Legacywas canceled by Amazon after only three seasons on Freevee. Harry Bosch has been on television screens for over a decade, with the originalBoschseries running for seven successful seasons. There is a temptation to refer toBosch: Legacyas a long-running show, but it is very much its own entityand should be treated that way.

There seems to be an attitude of 10 years being a good run, and fans should be happy with that. However,Bosch: Legacyis a different show to its predecessor, with new characters introduced whileMaddie Boschand Honey Chandler were elevated to co-leads alongside Harry Bosch. The character arcs inBosch: Legacyare far from being completed, and this is a show that has very much been canceled prematurely.

Most shows don’t run for anything close to ten seasons, and if they do, the quality usually dwindles as the seasons go on. Collectively,BoschandBosch: Legacyhave maintained a high standard of storytelling, so it was a shock when the latter show was canceled.Due to Harry Bosch being the main lead in both shows, they are often classed as one and the same. This isn’t necessarily incorrect on the surface, as story arcs are carried over from the original series. However,it’s important to remember thatBoschandBosch: Legacyare still essentially different shows.Harry Bosch is seen as an equal co-lead with Chandler and Maddie inBosch: Legacy, and the spin-off also introduces new characters likeMaurice ‘Mo’ BassiandReina Vasquez.

Everybody Counts Or Nobody Counts

Bosch: Legacy’s cancelation should not be considered justified on the basis of Harry Bosch’s solo stories ending after 10 long seasons. No, the upcoming season is only the third outing of Bosch’s post LAPD storyline, and the creative team were just getting started with this particular part of his arc, while also developing the supporting characters' stories. Basically, this isn’tBoschseason 10. The majority of the characters from the original series are gone, aside from sporadic guest appearances byCrate and BarrelandJerry Edgar, among others. The vibe is different, while still capturing the main essence of what fans loved about the originalBoschseries.

Amazon Are Treating Bosch And Bosch: Legacy As One Long Running Show For One Very Simple Reason

Amazon clearly treatedBoschandBosch: Legacyas the same show, but the creative team and the majority of the fans certainly don’t see it that way. Let’s try and delve into Amazon’s mindset to figure out why they would approach it this way. Spoiler alert: it probably has something to do with saving money.Boschran for seven successful seasons between 2014 and 2021 until Amazon decided they’d invested enough money in it.Every additional season of a show is more expensive to make than the previous one, with the pay grade going up for the core cast. However, if one show ends, and a ‘new’ one starts, it’s back to square one in terms of cost. The majority of the mainBoschcast were let go and/or relegated toguest spots inBosch: Legacy, and the pay scale was reset. New and cheaper-to-pay actors were introduced, while Titus Welliver, Mimi Rogers and Madison Lintz essentially signed up for a brand-new show. In Amazon’s eyes,BoschandBosch: Legacyare the same show, but they were just using a loophole to reduce the cost of making it.

Bosch: Legacyhas been a massive success, but this comes with one big caveat for Amazon: the more successful it is, the more expensive it is to make. The main cast demand more money, while the price of shooting in Los Angeles has gone up significantly. Amazon’s overpaid problem solvers had the answer: create a new show based on cold case investigator, Renee Ballard, and persuadeTitus Welliver to sign a contractto guest star in just three episodes, while he believes he’ll continue in future seasons ofBosch: Legacy. However, they pulled the rug from under Welliver’s feet, along with his co-stars, and canceledBosch: Legacy, and nixed Michael Connelly’s expanded universe.Amazon were actually never trying to expand the Bosch-verse at all, they were trying to find the cheapest way of continuing what they considered to be a long-running show that started way back in 2014. The creative team will treat theBallardspin off as its own thing, but if Amazon approaches it similarly toBosch: Legacy, it will be canceled before it has a chance to expand on its success.Harry Bosch and Renee Ballardwill probably be transferred toa revived Jerry Edgar spin-off, or even worse, Amazon will wash their hands of the Bosch-verse altogether.
