Creator Maddy Thorson explained that the studio had made the difficult decision in December 2024 but felt it was better to wait until the new year to announce it to the public. The cancelation stems in part from disagreement among the team over the IP rights forCeleste​​​​​, and while everyone involved eventually resolved the conflict, it ended in one founding member of Extremely OK leaving the studio. This was not the only factor — the devs haddelayedEarthbladebeyond 2024before the fracture in the team, suggesting there were already problems in development — but the split may have been the final nail in the coffin.

Extremely OK Games Cancels Earthblade But Will Release Other Projects in the Future

Thorson details that losing a core member of the team led the studio to reflect onEarthblade’s development and question if it was worth the toll it was taking on everyone. Ultimately, Extremely OK decided that it had been too much of a struggle and progress had been too slow to justify continuing to work on it. This is not the end of Extremely OK Games. Thorson ended the blog by saying the company would focus on “smaller-scale projects” and try to approach new titles the way it did withCelesteandTowerfall.

It will likely take time for news of any future projects to come out, as Extremely OK is starting with a fresh slate after cancelingEarthblade. It’s not the first cancelation fans have had to accept recently, either. Reflector canceled its franchise plans after the first entry,Unkown 9: Awakening, underperformed.
