Daredevil: Born Againstarted production with seemingly few connections to the original Netflix series besides the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. The most egregious omissions were that ofDeborah Ann Woll’s Karen Pageand Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock’s best friends and partners (love interest in Karen Page’s case). However, after Marvel Studios reviewed the initialDaredevil: Born Againfootage, they decided the series wasn’t working and retooled the project. Among the most significant changes was the addition of Woll’s Karen Page and Henson’s Foggy, to the delight of most fans.
The celebration was short-lived after the newDaredevil: Born Againset videosindicated that Henson’s Foggy Nelson would be killed by Bulleye early in the series. Despite the evidence, scooperMyTimeToShineHello(viaComicBookMovie) reportedly claimsHenson will reprise his role as Foggy Nelson inDaredevil: Born Againseason 2. However, MyTimeToShineHello was unaware if this meant Foggy Nelson survivesDaredevil: Born Againor if he will return through flashbacks. As of this writing, official sources have not confirmed or denied this rumor.
Assuming MyTimeToShineHello’s claims are correct, there could be a handful of explanations for Foggy Nelson’s return inDaredevil: Born Againseason 2. One potential explanation would be that fans are wrong and Foggy Nelson isn’t killed in the first season. Of course, the set videos and photos are damning, andFoggy Nelson’s death inDaredevil: Born Againwas rumored long before the creative overhaul occurred. Some fans speculate that theDaredevil: Born Againteam shot multiple versions of Foggy’s alleged death scene, potentially giving them the option to reverse course and/or have a different character meet their demise (possibly Karen Page).
Still, the most obvious explanation is that Foggy Nelson does die and thatDaredevil: Born Againseason 2 will use flashbacks for his supposed return. Foggy Nelson was Matt Murdock’s best and oldest friend on the Netflix show, so it would make sense for Matt to reflect on their friendship as he grieves. Regardless, the absence of Foggy or Karen is a worrying sign for most fans.
The relationship between Murdock, Nelson, and Page was one of the Netflix show’s strongest elements. DespiteDaredevil: Born Againshowrunner Dario Scardapane’s criticismof the Netflix series, the smaller character moments stood out just as much if not more than the stellar action scenes. Omitting even just one member of the show’s core trio could mean the new showrunner fails to recognize why fans loved the NetflixDaredevilseries. It’s too early to tell, but Foggy Nelson will be missed by many if rumors of his death are not exaggerated.
