Summary

One could argue that Episode Revenant was one of the most important releases forDestiny 2- not necessarily for its gameplay and new additions, but rather because of how it was received and based on player feedback. Revenant introduced a lot of bugs in the game, some of which are still lingering, while others have been fixed over time. Among other problems with the Episode is the infamous Tonic system inDestiny 2, which can still feel unrewarding and inconsistent even after multiple passes from Bungie. As such, the company should use Revenant as a springboard to avoid issues that players have been vocal about in the future, including some that came with the new Act 3 Exotic mission.

Revenant added its own Exotic mission in the form ofKell’s Fall inDestiny 2, which takes players to Fikrul’s fortress. Here, Guardians can obtain the new Exotic shotgun Slayer’s Fang, which uses the same formula as its predecessors from other Exotic missions, in the sense that it is craftable once the pattern is unlocked on the first completion of Kell’s Fall. On top of that, players can complete the mission multiple other times to unlock the various Catalysts for the weapon, but this formula is proving to be tearing at the seams.

Destiny 2’s Kell’s Fall Exotic Mission is History Repeating Itself

WhileDestiny 2’s Exotic Slayer’s Fangis a nice addition to the arsenal at players' disposal, and while Kell’s Fall is a well-designed and entertaining mission in its own right, forcing players to complete Exotic missions over and over just to unlock Catalysts is something that should stop with Heresy. It’s no secret that Revenant was a flop for the game, which is due to several factors, like the perk weighting controversy, Tonics not working properly, weapons being few and not craftable, etc.

Why Destiny 2’s Heresy Should Change Its Approach to Exotic Missions and Catalysts

What follows is thatDestiny 2’s Heresy has to make good changesto the game’s tried formula, and making Exotic Catalysts from their respective Exotic missions obtainable in one sitting would be a great starting point. This is because there is a tendency withinDestiny 2to create things to do artificially by making players go through the same missions and other pieces of content over and over in order to get what they want or need for their builds. This approach can be detrimental because, rather than making players want to replay something, the game is built on requiring them to.

Exotic missions are one of the many examples that fall under this umbrella, as they are designed with time-gated content that unlocks over multiple weeks with slight tweaks to the missions themselves, only to then allow players to obtain a new Catalyst. Kell’s Fall is a goodExotic mission inDestiny 2, and it even includes some elements of novelty with its Scorgan instrument and how Guardians can play it. This prompted fans to compose their own melodies on the instrument as they shoot it or even play famous songs on it, which made the mission all the more unique and memorable.

Instead, having to go through Kell’s Fall multiple times can have diminishing returns on the magic and involvement it brings, and the same has happened in the past with other Exotic missions. The solution would be to allow Heresy’s Exotic mission, assuming it will have one, to provide all the various Catalysts for its associated weapon in one mission completion, offering other rewards for players if they replay it multiple times.Destiny 2’s change to Festival of the Lost armor setsthat makes the ones that lose the community vote become available at a later date is proof that Bungie is listening to player feedback, so there is hope that Exotic missions will go through this much-needed improvement.
