Galaxies will collide on Tuesday, February 4, when the hit free-to-play first-person MMODestiny 2crosses over with theStar Warsuniverse. First announced on Tuesday, January 28, the crossover will arrive alongsideDestiny 2’s latest expansion, Heresy-Act 1, the game’s third Episode and final epilogue of the Light and Darkness Saga. Here, players will be able to unlock new Hunter, Titan, and Warlock armor inspired by some of the Galactic Empire’s most iconic troops, including the Stormtrooper, Death Trooper, and Royal Guard. While the crossover will bring additionalStar Wars-themed cosmetics, one glaring opportunity was seemingly missed or withheld: lightsaber skins for swords.
Destiny 2’s Star Wars Features and Absences
For theStar Warsarmor, Hunters will have access to the Covert Ranger armor based on the armor of Death Troopers, first seen in2016’sRogue One: A Star Wars Story. While this armor does come with the Hunters’ signature cloak, a piece of clothing Death Troopers are never seen donning inStar Wars, it does not feature a signature hood over the helmet like most Hunter armor. Titans will have access to the Shock Enforcer armor based on the armor of common Stormtroopers. Warlocks will have access to the Royal Protector armor based on the armor of Imperial Royal Guards, with the Warlock’s Royal Protector Bond appearing to be based on the Royal Guards’ force pikes.
The Galactic Empire-themed armor isn’t the onlyStar Wars-themed cosmetics coming toDestiny 2. Players will additionally have access toa new Ghost Shellinspired byReturn of the Jedi’s Death Star II Mobile Battle Station. This Shell even features a green superlaser similar to the Death Star’s superlaser dish though its dish is located on the station’s northern hemisphere, while the Shell’s is located along the equator similar to Death Star’s original design as seen in station’s grid plan animations. It’s further expected players will be able to pilot a TIE Advanced x1-inspired ship and presumably a 74-Z speeder bike-inspired Sparrow based on the repeated Imperial iconography.
Missing Star Wars Features in the Destiny 2 Crossover
While players will receive newStar Wars-themed emotes and finishers on top of the new cosmetics, the lack of lightsaber ornaments for swords or specific types of swords is a glaring absence. Emotes of lightsabers may appear, but these may seem like half measures to many fans.The lightsaber is perhaps the most iconic weapon in the entireStar Warsfranchiseso having it not be usable in this crossover is surprising considering it’s been used in other crossovers such asFortniteandSoulcalibur. Lightsabers could have appeared as limited time skins for Hive cleavers until the next act of Heresy or instead appear as skins for rare and exotic swords such as Ergo Sum and Half-Truths.
Potential Content in Future Destiny 2 Star Wars Crossovers
If theDestiny 2 Star Warscrossover is proven successful among fans of both franchises, Bungie and Lucasfilm could collaborate again for future crossover events. Given the primarily Imperial nature of the upcoming crossover, Bungie and Lucasfilm could focus on other elements of theStar Warsuniverse in future crossovers, such as the Jedi, the Sith,the Clone Wars, the High Republic, or the First Order-Resistance War. This could allow Guardians to don more varied armor beyond those of the Empire’s military, such as Jedi and Sith robes. It can additionally allow players to unlock otherStar Wars-themed cosmetics, such as an X-Wing-inspired ship or an R2-D2-inspired Ghost Shell.
In terms of gameplay, futureDestiny 2Star Warscrossovers could allow players to wield lightsaber skins of some of the most powerful or popular swords in the game. To build off this new gameplay feature, Bungie could additionally develop some firearms inspired by some ofStar Wars’ most iconic blasters, such as Han Solo’s DL-44 pistol, Chewbacca’s bowcaster, or Din Djarin’s Amban phase-pulse blaster. Bungie could possibly even create limited timeStar Warsskins for a fewDestinyenemiesfor players to fight, such as Super Battle Droid skins for the Vex or Stormtrooper skins for the Cabal.
