Summary
Dynasty Warriors: Originsgot its start in a bittersweet way, its developers have revealed, as they had been previously working on what was shaping up to be the 10th mainline installment in the series before canceling it to make way for the new game. Deluxe Edition players have already taken their first dive intoDynasty Warriors: Origins' fast-paced combat, but the game may not have been made without a major technological leap from four years ago.
For those who didn’t pay extra for early access,Dynasty Warriors: Originsis set for releaseon Jun 08, 2025. Featuring the free-roaming hack-and-slash combat style that the series has been known for since its second mainline installment in 2000, the game casts players as a mysterious, amnesiac character, interacting with some of the greatest officers of China’s Three Kingdoms Era.

But while some fans of the longstanding series have already had the chance to step into the shoes ofDynasty Warriors: Origins' nameless protagonist, members of the development team at Omega Force have recently revealed that another game in the series was canceled prior to the beginning of its development. In aninterview with Japanese site 4Gamer, which was originally translated to English bySiliconEra, development producer Masamichi Oba revealed that the studio had been working on a “phantom number title” under theDynasty Warriorsbrand. This canceled title would have followed a pattern of clearing stages, which he said would have been close in nature to 2011’sDynasty Warriors 7, and it would have followed a much different format than the finished product that early access fans are already enjoying.
Dynasty Warriors 10 Was Canceled to Make the Best Dynasty Warriors Possible
The biggest reason behind canceling the 10th named game in the series, as explained in the same interview by producer Tomohiko Sho, came after the development team witnessed thepower of the PlayStation 5and other current-generation consoles released around that time. After seeing what was possible under more modern system specs, the developers made the decision to change their strategy for the next game, although they continued to incorporate some of the best elements of previousDynasty Warriorsgames.
That includes bringing in some elements from the canceled project, according to Oba, who said while leaving the other project behind was difficult, the team was still able to bring life to some of its features. These elements includetravel inDynasty Warriors: Origins, as he had already been wanting to add a free-roaming map to the canceled title, as well as a deeper dive into the story behind the Three Kingdoms Era.
