Summary
RPGs are a staple of gaming. From the earliest editions ofDungeons & Dragonsto the latest triple A releases, the genre is one of the most enduring and creative both on and off screen. Players pick who they are and what role they play in the game world.
But that freedom lets players pick ways to play that might not be entirely in line with the more serious tones some games in the genre present. Sometimes its just nice to be able to ignore all the horrific futures, post apocalyptic nightmares, and massive dragons burning down towns, sometimes players just want the chance to be silly. So here are ten RPGs which can be turned into a comedy.
Fallout 4offers a wide range offun and colorful buildsfor players to try. And that extends to players that really want to get silly with their characters. While the game on its face generally lets players run some powerful builds such as using a gatling laser and power armour, or running around with a shotgun there’s just something about using the sillier weapons that makes the post apocalypse so much fun.
Whether using the hilarious junk jet, which allows players to fling everything from teddy bears to iron bars at their opponents, to the incredibly ridiculous Nuka Blaster, a squirt gun that can be upgraded to irradiate enemies to death, players can get really creative with their weaponry.
Based onDungeons & Dragons, the legendary tabletop RPG,Baldur’s Gate 3lets players pick from dozens of classes and subclasses. With everything from a traditional sword and board fighter to a crazy necromancer available to players.
Barbarians are one of the most entertaining classes available. A big brute smashing through monsters and madmen alike. But players can do more than that. Taking the right subclasses andmulticlassing into Eldritch Knightfighter will allow players to retrieve thrown weapons of course, but alternatively there’s the option to just grab the nearest friend or foe and send them careening into whatever seems like a juicy target.
For a game set in the desolate hellscape of the Lands Between,Elden Ringreally offers some incredibly silly weapons for players to use. Whether its throwing giant jars at your opponent or a shield with a face on it that breathes fire. Goofy weapons are no stranger in the world ofElden Ring.
But for those players that really want to embrace the ridiculous there are three weapons that will certainly be of interest. The Oracle Envoy’s Horn, Long Horn, and Greathorn. These two weapons let players blow bubbles at the horrors of the Lands between, bubbles that somehow kill. Using the summons mechanic its even possible for players to summon Oracle Envoys to fight alongside them, turning arenas into a bubble filled nightmare.
With the multitude of classes to choose from inBaldur’s Gate 3,Bard might seem like an odd choice. Why pick a musician when there’s the possibility to play a colossal barbarian, stoic paladin, or sneaky rogue. From just looking at what a bard is, it might seem pointless. Even withthe multitude of subclasses
But that’s ignoring where the bard excels. Debuffs and buffs, keeping your party alive and making enemies easier to bring down. What makes it funny is the inclusion of vicious mockery. The ability to bring down even the biggest enemies in the game by simply shouting “Oi, ugly” or “Feculant Beast” can turn some of the deadliest and most difficult battles in the game into an insult hurling match.
TheMass Effectseries lets players blast their way across the cosmos with a host of colorful characters in tow. With choices that matter, players can choose to be morally good or downright evil, or somewhere inbetween.
Playing as a renegade is infinitely funny. While players are certainly making the wrong choices at almost every interval, they’re also making the most hilarious. Whether it’s threatening random civilians for almost no reason, sassing the alliance council, or just punching a reporter for daring to question the great Commander Shepard.
Disco Elysiumis not a happy game, taking place in a powder keg of a city, and following the grisly murder of a corporate goon. Players take the role of an amnesiac detective, unable to remember their name or their past following a night of hard alcoholic drinking. . But the game throws a curveball by being really, really funny at times.
The bumbling detective being so effortlessly charming and the option to make all the wrong decisions or skill checks is brilliant. Punching the gigantic racist can be cathartic if players made themselves a physical powerhouse, but the alternative animation of them getting smacked around is still pretty funny. The detective opening up to anyone and everyone about losing his gun and badge, and just generally being an amnesiac, creates some hilarious interactions.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrimis a massive sandbox-esque adventure that lets players really be the hero of their own story. Players can do anything from joining the Thieves Guild, to signing up to fight as a part of the Imperial Military, all in a single playthrough.
But for those who crave a little bit of randomness in their games, checking out the Blue Palace is a must. Inside players can find Sheogorath, god of madness. Completing his quest will net players theextremely powerful Wabbajack, a staff that randomly transforms anything you shoot with it. Want that bear to become a chicken? They just might, or become a cake rolling along the floor, or they’ll be hit with a random spell, or even become a dremora warrior. It makes the game endlessly entertaining.
Cyberpunk 2077is an excellent game with fluid, hard-hitting combat. Players can choose from a medley of different builds and playstyles, from devouring souls using the blackwall toroleplaying as Johnny Silverhand.
The melee options of the game are extremely varied, but blunt melee weapons can be some of the funniest ways for players to battle the gangs and corpos of Night City. Cyberpsychos are thrown around the room like ragdolls and the meanest mercs are used as bowling balls for their friends. For the most immature, there’s even the option to use a giant sex toy to batter away the evils of Night City.
Elden Ringand its predecessors in theSoulsborneseries are notorious for their difficulty. Players must master their timing, build their character well, and equip themselves properly in order to withstand the brutal onslaught of the game’senemies and bosses. But what if you didn’t need to do that?
The Wall build probably wouldn’t be that funny if someone started with it, however for anyone who’s suffered through Melania or Radagon, the build is downright hilarious. Watching these incredibly difficult bosses struggle to deal damage as their healthbar is slowly deleted is just cathartically brilliant.
Fallout: New Vegasis one of the most lauded RPGs of all time. While we’re likely to find out the canonical endinginFalloutseason two, the game remains a masterclass in player choice. Boasting unlimited ways to play, one of which is downright hilarious.
PlayingFallout: New Vegaswith one intelligence allows for tons of unique dialogue choices that turn the game from a dark yet wacky look into politics and human nature, to a farcical comedy. Almost every major dialogue tree in the game has a hidden option for a one intelligence character that just upends anything serious going on.
