In this scenario, beloved Gintoki Sakatais a freelancer who ends up joined by Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura. Together, they take many oddjobs that often involve criminals. While it is mostly an episodic series, there is a larger plot developing in the background.

It was serialized from 2003 to 2019, compiled into 77 volumes. Studio Sunrise, most known for theGundamseries, adapted the story into animation from 2006 to 2010. The following arcs were adapted by Bandai Namco Pictures, which is also handling the new spin-off animation.
