Summary

A talented group of modders have released a massive mod forGrand Theft Auto 4titled theGTA: Vice City Next-Gen Edition, despite numerous takedown claims on YouTube from Take-Two. The newGrand Theft Auto 4mod is one of the most ambitious fan creations that has been seen in some time.

After gaining traction on YouTube over the last few weeks, Revolution Team’sGrand Theft Auto: Vice City Next-Gen Editionhad fans excited. It’s a mod that recreates all ofVice CityinGrand Theft Auto 4, including missions, cutscenes, and side activities. The footage of the mod looked amazing, and it seemed as though it could be an epic alternative to thecritically malignedGrand Theft Auto: Vice City - The Definitive Edition. As it often goes with these types of projects, it attracted the attention of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, which had Revolution Team’s YouTube channel taken down alongside trailers for the mod.

As first reported byIGN, Revolution Team has gone ahead and releasedGrand Theft Auto: Vice City Next-Gen Edition, regardless of Take-Two’s prior actions. In a statement, the team described the removal of its YouTube channel as a “cruel move,” but decided to proceed ahead to avoid “any risks which could disrupt the release.” For Revolution Team, “The most important thing now is that we released the project on the promised date.” The team does remain clear that it’s unsure how long thisGrand Theft Auto 4modwill be publicly available, but points out that it’s “not opposed to reuploads” in the event Take-Two does take it down.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Next-Gen Edition Mod Released for GTA 4

The initial plan forGrand Theft Auto: Vice City Next-Gen Editionwas to require the base game ofGTA 4"to show respect to the publisher." That’s not the case in the release version, with the change made “to ensure the mod’s stable performance for the widest possible audience.” It’s difficult to imagine this will help matters for the mod going forward. Take-Two has plenty ofhistory of taking downGrand Theft Automods, so it would certainly be of very little surprise to see it go down in the future.

With Rockstar finishing up thedevelopment ofGrand Theft Auto 6, it hopefully won’t be long until gamers can return to Vice City in a more official capacity. The game is still currently locked in for a late 2025 launch, although this could change depending on the state of development. GivenGrand Theft Auto 5was released back in 2013, it’s fair to say that gamers have been patient over the years.
