In December, a newMobile Suit Gundamseries was announced, and people in the US will watch in cinemas! It is the firstGundamproduced by Sunrisein partnership with the studio Khara, producer ofRebuild of Evangelion(and the studio currently holding the rights for the Evangelion series).
The series is titledMobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX(“GQuuuuuuX” should be pronounced something like “G-Quacks”), and it will be writtenHideaki AnnoandYoji Enokido. The director isKazuya Tsurumaki. Anno isthe creator ofEvangelion, and Enokido and Tsurumaki have worked on at least some installments of the series.
GKIDS announced ithas acquired the rights to the prologue movie,Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, and it will be in North American (US and likely Canada) theaterson July 30, 2025.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX
The movie is a prologue to the TV series, whose debut day is yet to be announced. The production team is likely to unveil more information soon, as the film is already screening in Japan.
This new story is set in a colony in outer space. Amate Yuzuriha is a regular girl attending school, until she meets Nyaan, a war refugee, and they learn about Clan Battles, illegal fights using mobile suits. That’s where the GQuuuuuuX comes in, as it will be piloted by Amate in those battles. The thing is, space forces and police are now after her.
Other staff members credited in the production areTake(Pokémon Sun & Moon) as character designer, andIkuto Yamashita(Shin Kamen Rider, Evangelion) as mechanical designer.
Anno’s Involvement in the Series
While Anno is writing the scripts, Tsurumaki is apparently hiding the final results from him. According to Ikuto Yamashita, the project is supervised only by Tsurumaki:
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXis supervised by Kazuya Tsurumaki. He decides everything as the director. Anno might be giving him some support on the sideline, but that’s all. As the president of Khara, Anno will be informed about the development of the project. However, [Tsurumaki] hides everything until the very last minute, to avoid being overturned or having to redo everything.
GQuuuuuuXis likely to be a show thatanyone who hasn’t watched otherGundamseries can enjoy.
While theGQuuuuuuXprologue movie is coming to North America next month, the TV series debut date remains to be announced.
