TheHarry PotterTV series is billed as a “faithful” adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series. WhiletheHarry Pottermoviesare regarded by many as classics, the HBO TV series will naturally seek new actors for the iconic roles of Harry, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and more. A fewHarry Pottermovie alumni have expressed doubts about returning for the TV series in some capacity, but one former actor is open to the idea.

During an interview withScreenRantto promote his upcoming STARZ series titledThe Couple Next Door,Harry Pottermovie star Alfred Enoch expressed interest in returning for the HBO TV series. Enoch, who played Gryffindor student Dean Thomas in theHarry Pottermovies, was asked if he’d be open to returning as a different character, perhaps in a mentor role. In response, Enoch said he would love to return as a Hogwarts professor, potentially as a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, a job that ended up being replaced by a new character in eachHarry Potterbook and movie.

I wish I could say I learned enough to be a mentor to anyone, but I think probably they’d have to find someone else for that… I’d love that. That’s good. That’s only a one-season job, isn’t it?

Enoch joins fellowHarry Potter movie actor Matthew Lewis, who played Neville Longbottom, in saying they would love to play a new character for HBO’s series. Specifically, Lewis was willing to return to play Professor Remus Lupin, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher inHarry Potter and Prisoner of Azkabanwho was played by David Thewlis. However, not every formerHarry Potterstar is interested in joining the TV series. OriginalHarry Potteractor Daniel Radcliffe doubted he would returnfor the TV series, arguing it would be distracting if the showrunners wanted a fresh start.

Hollywood seemingly enjoys casting actors in new roles for reboots or fresh adaptions of projects they were originally part of.Netflix’sWednesdayseries cast Christina Ricci, who played the role in theAddams Familymovies from the ’90s, as a dorm mother to Jenna Ortega’s version of the titular character. More recently, theWickedmovie featured cameos by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originally played Elphaba and Glinda in the Broadway play.

These casting decisions are often just fun nods to the past or gestures of respect to actors who originated a particular role. However, many fans believe theHarry PotterTV series should not cast any original actorsfrom the movies, arguing it would distract viewers and come off as a gimmick. Whoever plays the new versions of theHarry Pottercharacters will already be compared to their predecessors, so having those former actors on the show would only cast a larger shadow.

TheHarry PotterTV series is expected to premiere on Max in 2026 or 2027.
