Considering how frequently it’s been discussed on the internet, few people in the gaming community haven’t heard ofHollow Knight: Silksongby now. LikeGTA 6andHalf-Life 3, Team Cherry’s upcoming Metroidvania has been the subject of countless memes and jokes due to how long its development has taken. The game was originally announced back in 2019 as an expansion for the firstHollow Knight, but after its scope became broader, Team Cherry decided to turn it into a full-fledged, standalone sequel. Since then, updates onHollow Knight: Silksonghave been sporadic at best, and non-existent at worst. Despite being in development for over five years, there is still no release date or window for the game, much to the disappointment of fans.

TheSilksongfanbase has come up with countless theories and ideas about when the game will be released, and so far, none of them have turned out to be true. Many gamers believedHollow Knight: Silksongwould appear at Gamescom 2024, but that didn’t happen. Others were confident it would appear at The Game Awards last year, but that didn’t happen either. At this point, it feels like it’ll be ages until the game is finally released. Fans shouldn’t give up hope just yet, though, because an officialSilksongannouncement may be imminent if a new theory is to be believed.

Hollow Knight: Silksong Fans Think a Dev at Team Cherry Is Making an ARG

Some Reddit users on the r/Silksong subreddit are convinced that a developer at Team Cherry, William Pellen, has secretly been hinting at therelease date for the nextHollow Knight: Silksongtrailerthrough an elaborate alternate-reality game (ARG). Now, that may sound like complete nonsense at first, but the evidence that fans have collected makes this theory seem pretty believable. As recorded byReddit user hollowmartin, Pellen unexpectedly changed his Twitter profile on Jun 13, 2025, a day before the Nintendo Switch 2 was announced. He renamed his account “little bomey,” changed his Twitter tag to @everydruidwaswr, and replaced his profile picture with an image of a delicious-looking chocolate cake.

Upon further research, some fans have discovered an interesting detail about thepreviously mentioned cake photo. A quick Google Reverse Image Search reveals that Pellen’s new profile picture comes from a recipe on a website called Bon Appétit. The recipe in question, which is for a Brooklyn Blackout Cake, was posted on the site on May 23, 2025. This specific date doesn’t seem that important, but it can be connected to a tweet that Pellen recently made.

On June 22, 2025, William Pellen posted on his Twitter account that “something big was coming,” and he told fans to keep their “eyes closed tomorrow.” What’s strange about this statement is that Pellen used the word “closed” instead of “opened.” This may just be a simple mistake on his behalf, but according to some theorists, it has a hidden meaning. Fans have found out that the phrase “Eyes Closed. Tomorrow.” was actually used bythe popular rock band Imagine Dragonsin a tweet from July 15, 2025, the same day that the cake recipe was made.

Eyes Closed is the name of a song by Imagine Dragons featured in the band’s sixth studio album, Loom.

Some Gamers Believe Hollow Knight: Silksong May Show Up at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct

For those who don’t know, July 09, 2025 is going to be a pretty big day in the world of gaming because Nintendo will host its Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on that date. With this in mind, some fans have concluded thatHollow Knight: Silksongwill make an appearance in the upcoming Direct. The cake recipe and Imagine Dragons tweet that William Pellen seemingly hinted at are both associated with the day April 2, so this speculation makes sense, at least on the surface. Unfortunately, another employee at Team Cherry, Matthew “Leth” Griffen, has reportedlydebunked this entire theoryby denying the existence of an ARG. Even still, someHollow Knight: Silksongfans choose to believe that there is more to this story than Team Cherry is letting on.
