Summary

Bodyhorrorhas become more mainstream thanks toDemi Moore’s incredible performance inThe Substance. The 2024 film is a riveting look at beauty standards, the question of how someone can grow older in Hollywood, and how fame can change someone. There are more than a few gory scenes as Moore’s character Elizabeth Sparkle takes a strange drug and sees her entire world change. The movie is so popular that there are a fewinterestingThe Substancefan theoriesand many arestill unpacking the ending.

I love when a new horror movie becomes the focus of many pop culture conversations, and I’m in awe of Moore’s performance. Although body horror isn’t my favorite subgenre and I love slashers more, I’m excited to hear aboutAlison Brie and Dave Franco’s upcoming body horror movieTogether.

Here’s Why I’m Excited About The Upcoming Body Horror Movie Together

According toDeadline,Neon has bought the body horror movieTogether, which had a bidding war after it premiered at Sundance. The movie willbe in theaters on August 1st, 2025and was written and directed by Michael Shanks. Alison Brie and Dave Franco play a couple who move to the country when she gets a teaching position andthere’s a cave in a nearby forest with water that has supernatural powers.

I thinkTogetherwill be the next big body horror movieand I also think it’s cool that the success ofThe Substancepaved the way for more creepy and gory tales. Whilethere won’t be a sequel toThe Substance, I think it’s the perfect time to explore more body horror movies and check out past releases, likeDavid Cronenberg’s impressive and signature work. Like Moore, Brie and Franco are big names, and I bet that even those who aren’t so sure about this gory and sometimes gross subgenre will want to seeTogether.

Neon’s purchase ofTogetheralso proves thatNeon is a horror production company to watchsince they’re making such cool and compelling projects. Neon’s other movies includeOsgood Perkins’s adaptation of the Stephen King storyThe Monkey, Brandon Cronenberg’s dark 2023 filmInfinity Pool, the beloved 2024 movieLonglegs, and the recent supernatural releasePresence. While Blumhouse and A24 are still of course putting out popular and fascinating scary movies, I’m interested in seeing what else Neon puts out.

I also think thatBrie and Franco’s marriage makes them the perfect stars forTogether. This makes the shocking situation that their characters are in even more fun to watch. There may be severalhorror movies featuring great relationships, butTogetheris unique since the characters see their bodies change in truly disgusting ways. On the one hand, it’s nice that they’re going through the same thing since they can relate to each other. But on the other hand, that would change a marriage, that’s for sure. I can’t wait to seeTogetherand find out whether Brie and Franco’s characters have figured out how to remain married or if this horrifying situation tears them apart forever.

According toDeadline, Franco said about co-starring inTogetherwith Brie:

“We’ve been approached to act in many different projects together, we’re very selective. We don’t want people seeing us on screen too often where they become sick of us. This one felt right, not only was the script incredible, but our characters have been together over a decade, our relationship felt like it could lend itself in a nice way."

Alison Brie Starred In The 2020 Horror Movie The Rental, Which Dave Franco Directed

Togetherisn’t the first time that Alison Brie and Dave Franco have movie on a horror movie. Brie starred in the 2020 filmThe Rental, which Franco co-wrote along with Joe Swanberg and also directed. The story centers around two couples renting a house for the weekend and realizing that someone is spying on them.

The Rentalis nothingthe body horror movies fans always talk aboutand it sounds likeTogetheris very different since it’s about a supernatural presence, not a killer who targets people who stay in rentals. I loveThe Rentalbecause it’sa fresh take onthe home invasion horror subgenreand the performances by Brie, Dan Stevens, Sheila Vand, and Jeremy Allen White are impressive. There are some complex and difficult dynamics within the group, and I think those relationships, along with the creepy setting, make the film so good. Since it was released in 2020, many might have missed it, but I encourage any fan offrightening settings and fast-paced, witty dialogueto watch it.
