In the world ofJujutsu Kaisen, the cursed humans and cursed spirits have two different meanings but are not very far apart and the concept of curses is key to understanding the developments in the series. Cursed Humans are humans who have been affected by a curse.
This, however, is not limited to those who have been killed by a curse or are still living and are haunted by a cursed spirit. Cursed spirits, on the other hand, are a society of spiritual beings who are invisible to humans and are manifested from cursed energy that leaks out of humans due to negative emotions.
What Are Cursed Spirits, And How Are They Created?

The negativity of the world has been present since the dawn of the human race, individuals are severely affected by negative emotions such as trauma, sadness or suffering. These negative feelings leave lasting impressions and cause emotional wounds. Because of all this negativity leaking out of humans, cursed spirits are manifested and born into the world and cause havoc for humans. The cursed spirits then target humans to haunt andjujutsu sorcerers in turn targetthese cursed spirits to rid the world of them. Not much is known about cursed spirits, just that they are evil and they, most of the time, dwell on the misery of humans. Humans are not able to see or touch these cursed spirits but rather have strange symptoms that occur to them.
Cursed spirits come in all shapes and sizes, they also vary in strength depending on how they were created. Some curses can possess inanimate objects and these objects in turn become cursed corpses, giving them some sort of life of their own and mobility. This is seen during Nobara’s confrontation with the mannequin at the building where Yuji and her investigate on a mission given to them by Gojo. The most deadly of cursed spirits are the special grade cursed spirits who are able to think on their own and hold conversations, a prime example of an extremely smart and strong cursed spirit is Mahito as he was born thanks to the strong accumulation of the human emotion - hatred.Cursed spirits can be classifiedinto unregistered special grades, vengeful spirits, which are curses created by the death of a cursed human, registered special grades, and disease-cursed spirits, which are created because of the plague and other types of illnesses. A few other powerful cursed spirits include Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon.

Cursed Humans, on the other hand, are people who are afflicted with a cursed spirit. Special-grade curses are incredibly difficult to defeat and a great deal of cursed energy is needed to exorcise them, they can also be sealed away with enough cursed energy. In the case of Yuta Okkotsu, he was classified as a special-grade cursed human as he was haunted by his childhood friend who died in a tragic car accident. His cursed spirit, also known as Rika Orimoto serves as his personal cursed spirit, which he is able to manifest and control. He is also able touse Rika to unleash his cursed techniques, making him one of the most powerful and unique characters in Jujutsu Kaisen.
