Stan Lee, Jack Kirby
The team leader ofthe X-Men deserves to rollintoMarvel Rivalswith his trusted allies. With the likes of Wolverine, Storm, and Magik already debuting in the starting roster, it’s a shame that the man who should be leading them has been left out of the equation. Scott Summers has immense potential as a Duelist thanks to his powerful optic beams and Mutant leadership skills.
Sure, Cyclops might not get along too well with the Avengers, but that doesn’t mean he can’t rally the X-Men to him to create some great synergies with the team. Cyclops would make for a great ranged character who can blast enemies with his optics and even use them to take care of flying characters, and the immense power potential for his Ultimate is truly grand.
Dr. Hank McCoy is one of the smartest minds on Earth, and his intellect is often used alongside his cheery demeanor to aid the X-Men and the betterment of coexistence for mankind and mutants. With such a cheery blue fuzzball, one might expect Beast to perform exceptionally well as a Vanguard, allowing him to get a tad feral on enemies with his ferocious size. However, there’s greatpotential for this hero to be a Strategist.
The Strategists could use some more characters, and Beast would be agreat mutant representation, especially with how his compassion and technology could aid his team. Of course, Beast would work great as an agile Vanguard or a tech-heavy Strategist, as this scientific and animalistic mutant has all the charms.
Len Wein, Dave Cockrum
Kurt Wagner’s gifts as a mutant come from the template of the teleporting Azazel and the blue skin of Mystique, and with his childhood focused heavily on circus acts as a trapeze artist, Kurt was able to harness his abilities to be a powerful mutant with an act for showmanship. This all leads the Nightcrawler into the perfect position to become a Duelist.
Armed often with a rapier or other swords, Nightcrawler could teleport into the fight with a sword for his tail and his hands, flipping around the battlefield with his expert agility, and causing some pretty annoying counters and plays with his constant range of teleportation. Nightcrawler could join the Duelist roster as a nimble and fast hero.
Chris Claremont, Michael Golden
Rogue is a Southern belle with an immense gift, but also an immense curse. Rogue’s powers activate upon physical touch, so while she can never touch another with her skin, she can still use this ability to take away their powers. While Rogue has used this in the past to claim the powers of Captain Marvel to grant herself flight and super strength permanently, she can use it on others only temporarily.
Rogue’s role as a Duelist inMarvel Rivalswould bea complex one, as this super strength and flying mutant could cause quite a scene, and the fact that all she has to do is touch someone to take their powers, could make for an interesting Ultimate that sees her steal the powers of another, and temporarily disable them. Like Loki, this could mean that Rogue would make for a great temporary Strategist or Vanguard before the energy reserves of her leeched powers wain.
Chris Claremont, Mike Collins, Jim Lee
The ever-loveable charmer; Gambit is a mutant who definitely deserves a spot on the Duelists roster forMarvel Rivals. Gambit’s ability to overcharge inanimate objects with immense energy to cause them to explodecould make for a fun timefor Gambit-mains as they throw explosive playing cards at a distance to strike foes from afar.
Gambit doesn’t just have to overcharge things with his energy conversion powers, as he can also give enemies a good whack and thump with his fighting abilities with a bo staff. Besides his fighting style and charm, Gambit’s team-up with his wife Rogue could be something truly romantic and powerful.
Colossus once sought a simple life as a Russian farmer, but his ability to turn his entire body into steel provided him with the strength and defense that he needed to protect others. Colossus is a powerful fighter and one who can lead the charge for the mutants into a new age where they will be seen as equal to humans. With Colossus at the front, this Vanguard can shrug off punches and bullets to become the bulwark that the team needs.
Colossus could also have great synergy and team-ups with Wolverine, leading to a fastball special where Colossus can toss the vicious and furry adamantium-infused mutant. As for his own attacks, Colossus could use his metal skin to provide himself with plenty of shielding tomatch up against the Hulkfor a battle of fists.
Chris Claremont, Jim Mooney
There is an incredible opportunity forMarvel Rivalsto have Mystique feature as a Duelist, as her abilities could provide her gameplay with immense variations of fun. Mystique could be directly inspired by Spy from Team Fortress 2, where she could take on the appearance of someone from the enemy team toget into the backlinesand assassinate a Strategist, before jumping back out.
Considering Mystique is a master of disguise, and her powers provide her with shapeshifting abilities, she’s the perfect assassin to send in to take out the enemies from under their noses, and her brilliance with martial arts and knives provide her with defendable weapons for when she’s not in her camouflage mode.
Fabian Nicieza, Rob Liefeld
There is so much potential for Deadpool inMarvel Rivals, and a few teasers of the character are already present in-game. Yet, what could Deadpool do inMarvel Rivals? After all, this Merc with a Mouth has quite the legendary status as a killer and an annoying chatter-box, so would his healing factor be considered when it comes to his tool kit to make himan unstoppable killing machine?
With Deadpool’s proficiency in annoying conversations, katanas, and a whole range of guns, Deadpool could make a super action-packed Duelist, or even enjoy something more out of the box as a Strategist where he could provide buffs and debuffs with his voice and bizarre weaponry. No matter what role Deadpool has, this extremely popular anti-hero who’s a part-time Avenger, and part-time Mutant, would make for an instant pick for many fans.
