Summary
After what has felt like endless delays and false starts for theMasters of the Universemovie, it looks like the first live-action film in withthese characters since 1987. And while quite a bit of the more minute details for this movie are still under wraps, it looks like the man who will play He-Man/Prince Adam, Nicholas Galitzine has shed a little light on the tone of the story.
One of the keys to the originalMasters of the Universeanimated series and the first movie thatstarred Frank Langella as Skeletorwas that a bunch of very muscle-bound warriors were squaring off for the fate of more than just their planet. However, those battles and the stories that unfolded were far less severe than campy and fun, complete with a Battle Cat that was a cowardly kitten when he wasn’t transformed and ready to go get into a fight. However, the new movie might move away from embracing the camp.
Masters Of The Universe More Serious And Less Camp
Speaking toThe Hollywood ReporterGalitzine was asked how much research he’s been doing about the role of He-Man. In particular, he was asked whether he’d been watching theoriginalMasters of the Universecartoonin order to really get into the role. While the actor said that he has indeed watched the show, he’s getting to know the characters but there will be differences in this Masters of the Universe movie and what he watched for research.

“what I will say is our version is quite different from the original animation, which we all agree was camp within its own right and worked so well for the time,” theactor explained. “But there’s been a couple of iterations, obviously, sincethere was theRevelationversionofMasters of the Universe, and the comics themselves.”
“And we’re very much treating our script as as Bible, you know. But it’s kind of amazing to hear what this show meant to a lot of people,” Galitzine continued. “It was really formative for a lot of people, so it’s exciting to do something that will have a nostalgia element as well as hopefully attract a bunch of new fans.”
The announcement that the series is veering away from the tone of the original series will almost certainly be welcomed by some people who are hoping for something that is quite a bit better than what the original movie offered. While there were serious aspects of that film, the writing and casting choices led to there being a bit too much comedy in that edition. On the other hand, when talking about a new installment in theMasters of the Universefranchise, the movie is going to have to win over people who are devoted fans. And those devoted fans love that the cartoon was campy and that’s what endeared it to them to some degree. A new movie could either jumpstart the franchise for a new run, or set it back in a very big way.
