A new trailer forHanaroku: A New Dawn(orHanarokusho ga Akeru Nichi ni) has just dropped! This is a film by Studio Outrigger — do not mistake it for Studio Trigger, that produced series likeGurren Lagann, Delicious in DungeonandCyberpunk: Edgerunners. On Outrigger’sofficial website, the studio is described as an “IP producer & creator management” company.
This studio has previously animatedEgumi Legacy, a 12-episode anime series which aired in 2024 (each episode is 10 minutes long), soHanarokuis their first big project — and also, the first one in which they are credited as producers, and not only animators.
The new trailer confirmsthe movie will debut in “the whole country” (Japan) this year. It is directed byYoshitoshi Shinomiya. Check it out:
According toprevious news on MyAnimeList, the film aired last year at the Annecy Animation Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.
A New Dawn Main Staff And Plot
The Director Previously Worked with Makoto Shinkai
Yoshitoshi Shinomiya hadpreviously worked with Makoto Shinkai(who is alsoworking on a new movie). He is credited as episode director and key animator in Your Name. He also worked onThe Garden of WordsandChildren Who Chase Lost Voicesas a background artist. Other anime he has worked on includeFate/stay night: Unlimited Blade WorksandThe Garden of Sinners: Future Gospel.
This seems to be Shinomiya’s debut as a feature film director, but he has previously directed the music video clip for Chiaki Maruyama’s"Boukentai: Mori no Yuusha"and the commercials for a NHK x Advertising Council Japan campaign (theMottanaispecials). He is also working on another feature movie, seemingly a personal project, titledSuisoi no Tora(Fudge Factor).
He is also credited as the head writer, and this also seems to be his debut in this role, at least in commercial anime projects.
Shinomiya is not the only one who has worked on a Makoto Shinkai movie, as the main artist, Akiko Majima, is credited as Art Director inYour Name. Other staff members includeUtsushita(Heavenly Delusion) as character designer andShuta Hasumuna.
Besides Outrigger, other production companies involved in this project are Miyu Production and Asmik Ace (the latter is also credited as a distributor).
The plot revolves around Keitaro, a guy who creates fireworks by himself after his father has vanished. Meanwhile, the Obinata Fireworks Shop factory is at the verge of confiscation. This is a story about disaster, environment, extreme weather conditions… and youth.
