Summary

The second trailer forThe Monkeyhas debuted. The upcoming comedy horror movie directed byLonglegs’Osgood Perkins is based on “The Monkey,” a short story byStephen King, which revolves around a cursed toy monkey responsible for a slew of terrifying murders.

The murderous Monkey doesn’t directly kill, at least not in a way that can be traced to the dangerous toy, but every time it beats its cymbals, someone in the vicinity dies. The short story was far more subtle with the way it lead to one death after another as a family was plagued by the device which also kept popping up whenever someone tried to get rid of it.The second trailer for the movie, which is due out in theaters later this winter, shows that things inThe Monkeyget rather over the top in short order.

The Monkey Kills Everyone

The new trailer for the Monkey released on Thursday shows that the action is indeed over the top and blood asDivergent’s Theo James leads the upcoming movie’s cast, which also includesShe-Hulk: Attorney at Law’s Tatiana Maslany,The Lord of the Rings' Elijah Wood, andSweet Tooth’s Christian Convery, the last of whom plays the younger versions of James' twin brother characters, Hal and Bill.

This new trailer sheds a bit more light on the story in general. After the titular monkey’s first bloody kill, the narration explains thatHal and Bill discovered the toywhen they were kids, and they tried to destroy it several different ways, realizing that every time it clapped its cymbals, someone around them’s time was up. They even tried to drop the monkey down a deep well and did think they’d rid themselves of the monkey. Years later, Bill calls Hal and tells him that the demonic toy is somehow back and that they must destroy it. The rest of the trailer showcases the many victims who fall prey to the clapping cymbals of death.

The second trailer might also make those who thought the first teaser made The Monkey look a bit too goofy, feel a bit better about thedirection that Oz Perkinsis taking the project. This second trailer emphasizes that the movie will not be shying away from gore and will be fully embracing the terror of the Stephen King story.

One scene that features shots of blood pouring from the eyes of Hal and Bill’s mother (Maslany) is one of the most striking examples of this just how much the movie is going to lean into truly brutal deaths for everyone who has the misfortune of being in the monkey’s radius. The video shows plenty of othercharacters who are showered with blood throughout the trailer. The new sneak peek even shows that there’s more gore and death than was shown such as when a woman is about to dive into an electrified swimming pool. What’s clear is thatthe monkeyis not a subtle killer and murders its victims in a particularly gruesome and excessive fashion.Horror comedy fanswill get to see all those deaths in person when the movie debuts in February.
