Being a group of people that constantly hunt for treasure and steal gold from unsuspecting islands, it’s easy for a pirate to accrue a small fortune. That is, for most crews at least, as the Straw Hats inOne Piecehave consistently struggled with money problems, especially at earlier points in the series.
This begs the question; how much money would the Straw Hats need inOne Piecebefore they are considered wealthy pirates? While this question may seem like it would have an obvious answer, overall, it may be more complicated than just a specific number. With so many investments, such as expensive ships or incredible weapons, it seems likewealth inOne Piececan be measured in many different ways.
Berries In Money Have A Fairly Consistant Value In One Piece
This Currency Roughly Translates To One Yen
In theOne Pieceworld, Berries are the premier form of currency. This currency seems to be around the same value as a normal Japanese Yen. To convert that to the American Dollar, around 100Berries inOne Pieceare equal to one USD. Although Luffy’s bounty being in the billions may seem ridiculously high, while it still is a very large amount, when converted into American currency, it’s only in the tens of millions of dollars.

To buy a new, extremely fancy ship, the Straw Hats were willing to spend around 300 million Berries, or 3 million USD, an incredible sum of money. At this point,One Piece’sStraw Hats Pirateshad just stolen a large amount of gold from Skypiea and were fairly wealthy money-wise. Overall, over 100 million Berries seems like a good baseline to call a pirate wealthy, though before then, they would be decently well-to-do.
A Pirate Like Doffy Has A Massive Amount Of Money
Billions Of Berries Is Arguably The Upper Limits Of Pirate Money In One Piece
For a high end of wealth, the audience may have to take a look atOne Piece’swealthiest pirates, which includes characters like Big Mom and Doflamingo. Looking at Doffy specifically, when holdingthe island of Dressrosafor ransom, he demanded 10 billion Berries, or 100 million USD, for the island’s safety. From this, we can assume that Doflamingo, although he is probably more wealthy, views 10 billion Berries as an incredibly large sum of money. This means, as far as rich pirates are concerned, the high end of value seems to be around 10 billion Berries.
However, these calculations don’t take into consideration the sheer amount of assets that some ofOne Piece’sstrongest pirate crewspossess. The Straw Hats, for example, between their ship, the Thousand Sunny, and massive amounts of technology from Franky, probably are far wealthier than most fans would expect. Additionally, a character like Big Mom, who doesn’t seem to hold on to many physical Berries, also possesses many factories and sweets that could be worth a lot of money.
100 Million Berries Is Arguably Enough To Make A Pirate Wealthy
The Straw Hats' Money Troubles Vanished When They Gained This Much Money
Despite this, to answer a complicated question with a simple answer, it seems like a character would need 100 million Berries to be considered wealthy inOne Piece. Without needing to buy a massive ship or enough food to satiatethe Straw Hat Captain, 100 million Berries seems like it would be enough to let a crew sail the seas ofOne Piecein luxury. Though the Straw Hats, at the beginning of the series, had money troubles in the past, it seemed almost all their money troubles disappeared when they earned at least that amount of money.

In the end, past 100 million Berries inOne Piece, it seems that money doesn’t matter too much, making this a good point to call a pirate wealthy. However, when it comes to how rich a pirate can be, characters likethe former Warlord, Doffy, have fortunes that easily surpass any bounty amount that has been in the series thus far. While the Straw Hat Crew are fairly affluent after the time skip, it would be nice to see just how far they have come since starting as rookie pirates inOne Piece.
