One Piecefans frequently like to joke about obscure characters in references to the series. These jokes, although a bit silly at times, highlight the wacky and goofy antics that constantly permeate almost every episode in the series. Jokes and memes aboutOne Piececharacters like Condoriano, MocDonald, and other obscure characters are hilarious and remind other fans of iconic characters from hundreds of episodes in the past.
However, not every one of these joke characters is completely unimportant to the story ofOne Piece. In fact, one “joke character” that has been adopted bytheOne Piececommunity for memesis the character who started the Great Pirate Era himself. Although many viewers may believe that this was Gol D. Roger, the King of the Pirates, in reality, an entirely different person was the true reason every event inOne Piecehas happened so far.

A Random Character Asked Roger An Important Question In One Piece
This Character Single-Handedly Started One Piece
During Roger’s execution, the Pirate King slowly approaches his fate, silently going into position before awaiting his death. Many important characters from the series, includingtheOne PieceEmperor, Shanks, Buggy, Doffy, Crocodile, and more are shown to be attending the event. However, sadly, it seemed like Roger was going to just accept his death with a smile without mentioning anything else.
Where did you hide all the treasure you found? You got it, didn’t you? The legendary treasure! - A random member of the crowd at Roger’s execution

However, during the event, a random person in the crowd with no identifiable voice yells at the podium, asking Roger about his legendary treasure. From here, Roger, the King of the Pirates, explains that he left his treasure somewhere and that any pirate can claim it if they want. This moment that led tothe Great Era of Pirates, despite being caused directly by Roger’s answer to the question, wouldn’t have happened without the question that prompted it.
This One Piece Character Is Weirdly Important
Fans Have Dubbed This Figure Ask D. Question
Since little is known about this mysterious character who asked the most important question inOne Piece, the fans have adopted him as a joke character to join the ranks of many others. In many instances, fans lovingly refer to this character as, “Ask D. Question,” adding him to the ranks ofOne Piece’smysterious D. Clan. So far, plenty of jokes, memes, and community discussions have surrounded this character, who, to this day, still doesn’t have an official name.
Still, it’s interesting to wonder why such an unimportant character asked Roger such a vital question. With so many other legendary pirates at the event, liketheOne Piecevillain, Donquixote Doflamingo, it would have made more sense if one of them asked the important question. However, at the same time, the pirates were attempting to keep a low profile, so it makes sense they didn’t want to break their disguise. At the same time, it would have been interesting to see a character who hasn’t become a pirate yet, ask an important question like that before growing up to be a legendary figure.

Ask D. Question Could Be The Voice Of All Things
The Character Could Have Been A Manifestation Of The Ability
Although most of the conversations around this character are jokes, some fans have legitimate theories about this figure. Fans believe that Ask D. Question is a representation ofOne Piece’sVoice of All Things, a strange ability that characters like Luffy and Roger have. This ability, though others can’t generally hear it, manifested itself as a question that everyone could hear to ignite the Great Pirate Era. Although this seems a bit far-fetched, it would explain why no character was shown physically asking the question.
My treasure? If you want it, you may have it. - Gol D. Roger
While Ask D. Question is more of a joke character than anything, it’s easy to see why fans consider him to be one ofthe most important characters inOne Piece. Without this off-screen voice, most of the events in the series would never have happened, including Luffy’s adventure. Although many pirates still would have searched for Roger’s treasure, it was his words at his execution that inspired nearly every pirate who attended the event. In the end, while it may be funny to joke about, Ask D. Question truly was the real character who started the Great Pirate Era inOne Piece.
