Sanji, the chef of the Straw Hats, has anincredibly sad backstory inOne Piece. So many factors in his life have made him into the strange, yet compassionate, man he is in the modern chapters of the story. One small aspect of his personality, in particular, that only shows up briefly inOne Piece,may make Sanji’s tragic childhood even sadder in retrospect.

His Mother Was The Only Person WHo Truly Understood Him
As a child, Sanji was subject to a few tragic events in his life that all started when he was born as a member ofOne Piece’sVinsmoke family. While his brothers were being raised as mechanically enhanced super soldiers, Sanji was different, lacking the same intense strength of his family. However, being weak and the only emotional member of his brothers, Sanji was often subjugated to abuse, including locking him up in a jail cell. Sometime during his childhood, Sanji’s mother, who loved him very much, passed away from a long-term illness.

After this, Sanji was able to escape theVinsmoke family inOne Piecewith the help of his sister and made his way to the sea. Eventually, he meets the chef, Zeff, who, after a close encounter being stranded on an island together, took him in as a chef for his restaurant. From here, Sanji met Luffy and the Straw Hat Crew and eventually set sail to journey on the Grand Line.

Sanji Now Seems To Overeact To Any Illness
As most fans know,theOne Piecechef, Sanji, is an emotionally intense and goofy character, a trait he most likely picked up due to his emotionally distant childhood. His intense and desperate love of women comes from his mother’s and sister’s kindness to him at a young age, with other male characters abusing him severely. However, Sanji also picked up another small, yet sad personality quirk from his mother as well.
During the Little Garden Arc fromOne Piece’sAlabasta Saga, Nami contracts a dangerous disease, forcing the crew to try and find a doctor. While she was sick, Sanji became uncontrollably worried at the fact that she was not feeling well, claiming that she was going to die. At first, for many fans, this just felt like a gag with Sanji’s over-the-top personality, though now, with the added context from his childhood, this moment is incredibly sad.
Nami’s Sickness Reminded Sanji Of His Mother
Sanji Was Convinced Nami Would Die From Her Illness As Well
One major fan theory about this scene is that, in a way,the Straw Hat navigator, Nami, being sick reminds him of his mother, who had a fatal illness and was frequently in a hospital bed. For Sanji, losing Nami reminded him of the pain and suffering from losing his mother, making him unconsolable and desperate to help her. Additionally, outside his mother, this moment was Sanji’s only other encounter with a real sickness, which may be another reason why this moment hits too close to home.

It’s interesting to note just how muchthe powerful Straw Hat, Sanji, cares about Nami in this scene. Although most of his antics thus far had seemed extremely performative, this moment shows a genuine care for the well-being of his navigator. For a moment, before regaining his composure, Sanji legitimately thought he was going to lose his friend to an illness, just like he lost his mother.
With the added context ofSanji’s backstory inOne Piece, both the moment of Sanji crying over Nami’s illness and his backstory become even sadder. In the end, outside of all his negative qualities, Sanji is a character who is full of compassion for his friends. However, underneath his over-the-top personality lies a person who is scared to lose any more people that he cares about. Due to this fact, Sanji’s backstory may be one of the saddestOne Piecehas to offer.
