Summary

As the protagonist ofOne Piece, Luffy is full of redeeming qualities. Throughout his adventure so far, Luffy has been kind, courageous, fun-loving, goofy, and an all-around good person which makes him a wonderful hero of the story. Despite his shortcomings, Luffy is the only protagonist who could makeOne Pieceas special as it is.

However, that being said, Luffy does have some shortcomings inOne Piece. He’s hotheaded, impulsive, and lacks the attention span that would be vital to most pirates’ survival inthe dangerous landscape ofOne Piece. Despite this, the negative quality that is usually to his detriment the most is his lack of intelligence. Due to his lack of brains, Luffy has made some awful and incredibly dumb decisions throughout the story ofOne Pieceso far.

Luffy Has Made Many Dumb Decisions In One Piece

The Straw Hat Captain Isn’t Known For His Intelligence

Luffy has done plenty of extremely unintelligent things throughout the story ofOne Piece. Being a character of action, the protagonist ofOne Piece, Luffy, tends to act first, and then think about the consequences later. Although many wouldn’t regard it as being entirely stupid and more motivated out of passion for freedom, actions like taking on Crocodile orpunching the Celestial Dragoncould definitely be considered dumb decisions. Still, due to the other factors at play, these moments shouldn’t be considered the very dumbest thing she’s done.

Oh, okay! So he’s a shipwright who’s coating franky’s brother! - Luffy saying something incredibly dumb to Franky

Luffy Poisoned

At the same time,One Pieceis a light-hearted series. One gag that surrounds Luffy’s character is his lack of intelligence and naivety, something that has createdcountlessOne Piecememes. In many instances, Luffy’s lack of understanding is played for laughs and isn’t meant to be a serious evaluation of his character. These moments, like Luffy asking random people to join the crew, are where many of Luffy’s dumbest decisions emerge.

Falling For Crocodile’s Trap And Trying To Revive A Skeleton Are Hilarious Luffy Moments

Luffy Is At Least Being Earnest In These Moments

Firstly, an honorable mention for the dumbest thing that Luffy has done is falling for Crocodile’s trap duringOne Piece’sAlabasta Arc. When running down a hall, Luffy had the choice to turn left and go down the VIP hallway or turn right and head down the hallway labeled “Pirates.” Of course, Luffy being an honest individual, heads down the pirate hallway, leading his entire group into Crocodile’s trap, leading them straight to a Seastone cage.

Another honorable mention is when Luffy thought that Nami was turned into a skeleton duringOne Piece’sSkypiea Arc. After being swallowed by Nola, Luffy saw a skeleton that he thought was dissolved by stomach acid, despite the real Nami being right next to him. While this in itself isn’t dumb, Luffy approaches the skeleton, and asking it to hang in there is one of the funniest, yet dumbest decisions that he has ever made.

Eating A Poisonous Fish Is The Dumbest Luffy Moment In One Piece

Luffy Almost Died Because He Didn’t Listen

However, the dumbest decision that Luffy has ever made inOne Pieceis eating the poisonous fish inthe Whole Cake Island Arc. After catching a massive fish and without the help of Sanji, the Straw Hats were hesitant about whether they should eat it or not. However, while Chopper is checking Sanji’s notes, Luffy decides to eat it anyway, since he claims there is no such thing as an inedible fish. Despite his high resistance to poison, this decision proves to be nearly fatal, with Reiju needing to come in to save Luffy. Overall, this decision is especially dumb on Luffy’s part due to how many warnings he had not to eat the fish.

There’s no such thing as an inedible fish! - Luffy

In the end, while Luffy has made many dumb decisions in the past, these moments only makethe goofyOne Piececharactereven more endearing. In many ways, making these dumb decisions helps Luffy from becoming a stale and boring protagonist who is perfect in every single way. Plus, these dumb decisions are perfect examples of why Luffy needs his crew to help him on his journey, making up for the shortcomings that he does have. Overall, though these decisions may be dumb, if Luffy didn’t make these decisions, he wouldn’t be the goofy and naiveOne Piececaptain that fans love today.
