Overwatch 2Season 14 saw several updates with its midseason patch. The update introduced a Mythic weapon for Ashe, the return of Overwatch Classic, and a fresh 6v6 experiment called “Min 1, Max 3.” Notably, alongsideOverwatch 2’s midseason patch notes, the developers introduced a brand-new feature to its in-game shop.

LikeLeague of Legends' “Your Shop” andValorant’s “Night Market,” Blizzard’s hero-shooter now features a new limited-time shop called Maximilien’s Vault. As a new addition toOverwatch 2, the event has garnered quite a bit of attention from the playerbase, though not all of it has been positive. While some players are pleased with Maximilien’s Vault’s operation, others debate whether it’s been adequately optimized.

Players Are Not Satisfied With Overwatch 2’s Limited-Time Shop

Maximilien’s Vault Faces Criticism

Players can find Maximilien’s Vault on the title screen. Upon clicking, players can reveal five random skins tailored for them, with thelong-teasedOverwatchcharacter Maximilienappearing to negotiate a discounted deal. The first opening of the vault ends on January 28. Though no specifics are being offered at this time, fresh draws are expected to arrive with the next patch, which will be the start of Season 15.

Some players have been thrilled with the skins they’ve unlocked, with highlights including Kerrigan Widowmaker and Witch Kiriko. Others have snagged discounts on some ofOverwatch 2’s rarest skins, pleasing many collectors. Unfortunately, some players are less impressed, stating that though Blizzard claims Maximilien’s Vault is “customized to highlight [their] favorite heroes and gameplay preferences,” it doesn’t seem to reflect their actual preferences.

In aReddit threaddedicated to the vault, Reddit user u/AsianTemptasian pointed out that they received five Ana skins despite not playing her. This was followed up by others voicing their concerns, stating that they also pulled skins for heroes they don’t have more than half an hour of playtime on. Perhaps one of the most compelling was Twitch streamer andOverwatchcontent creator Frogger, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his exclusive shop deals:

The comedic aspect comes from Frogger being known foronly playing Lucio. As such, his five discounted skins, Rammatra, Junker Queen, Widowmaker, Zenyatta, and Roadhog, are surprising, to say the least. Some commenters have pointed out that he owns most, if not all, of Lucio’s skins, so the algorithm wasn’t sure what to recommend to him.

The Positives of Maximilien’s Vault

Of course, Maximilien’s Vault does have its positives. If it becomes a recurring feature, it has great potential, particularly for collectors and fans who may have missed the chance to purchase a cosmetic when it initially debuted. Furthermore, the discounted prices are a nice touch, especially consideringOverwatch 2’s shop prices have caused controversy. Not only could these discounts help address some of the community’s concerns about affordability, but Blizzard can also help ease the feeling of FOMO while attracting a wider audience with lower rates.

Still, Maximilien’s Vault could use some fine-tuning. Advertised as a feature that caters to players' favorite heroes and gameplay preferences, it isn’t always accurate. While it likely depends on the data Blizzard is examining, perhaps focusing on the most recently played heroes rather than the overall most played, the community seems to prefer it be based on the most played. Hopefully, futureiterations ofOverwatch 2’s ever-evolving shopscan reflect this.
