Summary

Production companyRooster Teethis making a big return, following its initial closure in May 2024. The news came after it was revealed that theRooster Teethbrand had been bought by Burnie Burns, one of the company’s initial founders.

Rooster Teeth was founded in April 2003 and quickly became known for itsHalomachinima,Red vs. Blue. The company became a staple in the gaming community, and several of its employees even appeared asEaster eggs in multipleHalotitles. As Rooster Teeth grew in popularity, so did its ambition. It went on to found several large YouTube channels, including Funhaus and Achievement Hunter, as well as the popular animeRWBY. It was eventually sold by its founders, who largely retained an active role in the company. Its previous final home was under WarnerMedia, which later closed Rooster Teeth.

In apress release posted online, original founder Burnie Burns confirmed he had reacquired the company he sold to Fullscreen back in 2014, in a deal that includes the brand and “much of its remaining assets” under his independent company, Box Canyon Productions. Some assets were sold separately upon Rooster Teeth’s initial closure, including itsflagship anime inRWBY. It remains to be seen which assets remain under the Rooster Teeth banner. In the press release, it was confirmed that “the historic brand plans to renew its focus on innovation, community engagement, and the spirit of creativity that first defined its success,” with Burns being “excited at the challenge of bringing Rooster Teeth back to its roots,” which can already be seen in the return of its classic logo.

Burns also addressed the purchase on his daily podcast,Morning Somewhere, which he shares with his wife and former colleague Ashley Burns. In it, he asked Rooster Teeth fans to avoid asking previous employees online if they’re returning to the company in the future, with many already undergoing new and successful ventures. Right now, there are plenty of questions about the acquisition, which will hopefully be answered in time. For now, it’s just good to know thatRooster Teeth’s closurewas just a temporary one.

People shouldn’t expect anything from Rooster Teeth in the immediate future. Alongside the acquisition, Burns' Box Canyon Productions also announced the development of “productions for 2025, including renewed production of some of the platform’s classic shows, a new original audio adventureAgain, and an untitled reimagining of Burns’ first filmThe Schedule.” Whether this contains a revival ofRed vs. Blueafter its cancelationremains to be seen.
