The first game in theFinal Fantasy 7remake trilogy originally launched for the PS4 in April 2020. Anenhanced edition of the game calledFinal Fantasy 7 Remake Intergradedebuted on the PS5 in June 2021 before making its way to PC in December of the same year.
The critically acclaimed JRPG is now also in the works for the Switch 2, according to well-known leaker NateTheHate, who said as much during the January 10 episode of his podcast. The second game in theFinal Fantasy 7remake trilogy,Rebirth, will be coming to Nintendo’s next console as well, the insider said.
FF7 Remake and Rebirth Are Also Reportedly Coming to Xbox
NateTheHate framed the purported Switch 2 ports ofFinal Fantasy 7 RemakeandRebirthas part ofSquare Enix’s multi-platform publishing push, which the Japanese gaming giant announced in May 2024. In addition to Nintendo’s upcoming console, both games are also on their way to the Xbox Series X/S, the long-time leaker said.Final Fantasy 7 Remakeis planned to land on Microsoft’s current-gen consoles in 2025, whileRebirthwill follow suit in 2026, as per the same source. NateTheHate did not specify the games' Switch 2 launch windows, but it’s plausible that they will mirror the Xbox release schedule he laid out. While these alleged ports suggest the possibility of the trilogy’s third game also going multi-platform, this won’t happen on day one, as Sony has already secured timed exclusivity rights for all three games.
When exactly the new versions ofFinal Fantasy 7 RemakeandRebirthmay be confirmed is unclear. NateTheHate speculates that at least one of them might be announced at the 2025 Xbox Developer Direct, which is scheduled to take place on January 23. The Switch 2 ports obviously can’t be confirmed before the console itself is officially revealed, which Nintendo promised would happen before the end of its fiscal year 2024, which runs until March 31. While new mainline entries in Square Enix’s iconic series have consistently skipped the Switch, the Japanese publisher has still extensively supported Nintendo’s hybrid console, which has received 16Final Fantasytitles to date, ranging fromFF15 Pocket Edition HDin September 2018 to the first sixFFgames in April 2023.
