Summary

One former Rockstar Games dev has stated thatGrand Theft Auto 6may not hit 60 FPS when it launches on consoles later in 2025. Being the first game in the highly popularGrand Theft Autoseries in over a decade,GTA 6is one of the most anticipated games of the year and is scheduled to roll out on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Ever since publisher Rockstar Games confirmedGTA 6’s development was in progress in 2022, fans have been tracking every update as they eagerly await the next chapter in the long-running action-adventure franchise. After theemphatic debut ofGTA 6’s first trailerin December 2023, the excitement around the forthcoming game has only amplified, giving rise to various fan theories and speculation in the process. Despite targeting a 2025 launch exclusively on current-gen consoles,GTA 6may be unlikely to sport the frame-rate capabilities found in many PS5 and Xbox Series games, if a recent statement is to be believed.

Mike York, an ex-Rockstar Games animator, recently chipped in with his thoughts aboutGTA 6’s possible frame rate at launch during an interview with Kiwi Talkz (viaGamesRadar). York echoed theconcerns surroundingGTA 6’s performanceand expressed his doubts about the devs being “able to pull off” 60 FPS on consoles, saying that he thinks the team will be “shooting for 30 FPS” instead. Getting specific, the dev said that the open-world title is likely to have its frame rate locked at 30 FPS, so that the performance “never dips” below that mark.

GTA 6 May Be Capped at 30 FPS with a Promise of Increasing Over Time

York admitted that even achieving a locked 30 FPS would require Rockstar Games to optimizeGTA 6"as much as they can." However, he didn’t completely rule out the possibility of a higher frame rate, especially with the yet-to-be-announced PC port of theGTAsequellikely arriving after its console counterpart. He added that the game would be “super optimized” by the time of its PC launch and get the benefit of running on more powerful GPUs, allowing it to “probably” reach 60 FPS.

While 60 FPS has certainly been a consistent attribute across various games this generation, enabling smoother frame rates on consoles hasn’t been a major priority for Rockstar Games. Although 2013’sGTA 5does support 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles,Red Dead Redemption 2is still capped at 30 FPSnearly seven years after launch. Based on how long fans have waited forGTA 6, the rumored capped 30 FPS frame rate may not be problematic to many who would just be happy that it’s finally out. Nonetheless, a 60 FPS experience would certainly be in keeping with the expectations for a current-genGTA.
