Summary

Screamis set to return for another film amid the hiccups after multiple actors left followingScream 6. According to a recent update, the anticipated slasher movie will keep at least one element from the previous movies.

TheScreamfranchise has been going strong for nearly three decades, and another movie is coming up.Scream 7was officially announced in March 2024, with Neve Campbell returning to the franchise after skippingScream 6due to a salary dispute. However, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, among the main characters in the previous movies, left the franchise for different reasons. The next film will reportedly focus on Campbell’s character, Sidney Prescott, and her daughters, and there will be a “big time jump.”

Movie insider Daniel Richtman shared some juicy details aboutScream 7on Patreon. According to him, the next movie will feature a “big time jump” following the events fromScream 6, presumably to allow Sidney’s daughters to grow up. Richtman previously saidMcKenna Grace will portray Tatum Riley, Sidney’s eldest daughter. Another source also claimed that there would be “two main storylines.” One will focus on Sidney and her pals in the neighborhood, and the second will highlight her teenage daughter, played by Isabel May. Initially,Scream 7was supposed to continue Barrera’s Sam Carpenter’s storyline. Her character was supposed to have a three-movie arc, but she was fired from the franchise due to her personal stand on the Israel-Gaza conflict. Following her exit, Campbell returned to the franchise and the next film would highlight her story with her daughters.

Aside from the time jump, Richtman also claimed thatScream 7will have multiple killers. He didn’t mention exactly how many. This is not a major spoiler, as it isn’t new for the franchise to feature multiple killers.Scream 6featured three Ghostface killers — Detective Wayne Bailey (Dermot Mulroney), Quinn Bailey (Liana Liberato) and Ethan Landry (Jack Champion). The Bailey family orchestrated the murder to avenge Richie Kirsch’s death. Richie, one of the killers inScream 5, is among Wayne’s children. Sam and Richie were lovers, but the latter attempted to kill the former. Sam, the daughter of Billy Loomis (one of the original Ghostface killers) embraced her dark side. She fought and survived by killing Richie to protect herself and her sister, Tara (Ortega).

The announcement thatScream 7has multiple killers is not surprising because the franchise has featured multiple Ghostfaces in most films. The first movie,Scream, released in 1996, introduced two Ghostfaces – Billy Loomis andStu Macher (Matthew Lillard). There have always been two Ghostfaces except inScream 3, where there was only one, Roman Bridger (Scott Foley), and inScream 6, where there were three. However, it remains unclear whether the next movie will have more than three killers this time.

The production forScream 7has already begun. Director Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original slasher classic and returned to the franchise to direct the next film shared a photo of theScream 7logo on Instagram on their first day of shooting. He teased that he wasn’t supposed to post anything about the project but struggled to keep it to himself because it was “one of the best days” of his life. It appeared that despite Barrera and Ortega’s exits from the franchise,Campbell’s return as Sidneywith her two daughters is enough to keep fans excited forScream 7.
