Summary
Sony owns the rights toSpider-Manand the company is reportedly likely to feature another Marvel character after Tom Holland’s stint as Peter Parker. Although Holland’sSpider-Manis a massive hit, the other films from Sony aren’t as successful.
Sony acquired the movie rights toSpider-Manin 1999 before Marvel Studios was founded. They also produced Tobey Maguire’sSpider-Mantrilogy (2002 - 2007) and Andrew Garfield’s two Spidey movies (2012-2014). Sony has a special agreement with Marvel Studios, allowingSpider-Manto appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony is developing its ownSpider-Manuniverse and has released films associated with the character, includingVenom,Morbius,Kraven the Hunter, andMadame Web.These films aren’t officially part of the MCU, and they received mixed to poor receptions, critically and commercially. Thus, it’s unsurprising that Sony is reportedly planning to work on anotherSpider-Manfilm with a different character after Holland’s Peter Parker.
Movie insider Alex Perez spoke about the MCU films and Marvel comics in a recent Q&A. He was asked about Disney Plus' seriesYoung Avengersallegedly being renamed toChampionsand whether it will feature Miles Morales. While Perez agreed changing the title toChampionssince it’s a “better fit for the name thanYoung Avengers,” he said it was unlikely for Miles to join the series because the character is rumored to have his own projects. “Miles won’t be a part of the Champions lineup, and neither will Nova (Sam Alexander),” Perez explained (via The Cosmic Circus). “Reasons why, is Miles (according to information I currently have, so please take this with a grain of salt) is going to be set in a rebooted Sony Universe that’s set to be established afterSecret Wars.”
Miles Moralesis a character from Marvel Comics who takes on the mantle ofSpider-Manafter Peter Parker. He was introduced inUltimate Fallout#4 (2011). Miles is an Afro–Puerto Rican teenager with an African-American dad and an Afro-Puerto Rican mom. He’s the second Spider-Man featured in theUltimate Marvel. If Sony plans to feature him next, they could introduce him in Holland’s next film. Holland has expressed interest in getting the character in his movies. “If I would be lucky enough to somehow bring Miles Morales into my Spider-Man universe and into the MCU, I’d love to do for a young kid what [Robert] Downey [Jr.] did for me,” theAvengers: Endgamestar previously said. Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man served as Spider-Man’s mentor and father figure in the MCU.
Introducing Miles Morales in a live-action movie adaptation could be a strategic move for Sony since the character is really popular. However, they still need to consider the casting and storytelling.Holland’s castingis one of the best parts of hisSpider-Manfilms because the audience loves him, and they embrace him fully in his superhero persona. In fact, he was only set to star in a trilogy, but due to the success ofNo Way Home, Marvel and Sony decided to work with him again forSpider-Man 4. Also, if Sony features Miles next, it remains unclear if they will still work with Marvel Studios on it. Perhaps they should because their projects with Marvel perform better critically and commercially.
