When Sakamotodecided to leave his career as a hitmaninSakamoto Days, many in the field and those he had grown close to were very surprised. It was not something they were expecting, especially since he was known as one of the best hitmen to ever live. However, his reasoning for leaving this career was due to the fact that he had found true love.
Just as unexpected for Sakamoto, he met Aoi, and immediately fell in love with her. But, due to the nature of his work, their relationship soon had its issues, with Aoi being morally against what he does. Once Sakamoto changed his ways inSakamoto Days, however, their relationship blossomed.
How Did Sakamoto and Aoi Meet?
Aoi Worked at a Convenience Store
Although Sakamoto had been working as a hitman since the age of 14, he had strong morals deeply rooted within him that was only brought to the surface by Aoi. When they first met, Sakamoto was checking out at the convenience store where Aoi worked, and immediately fell in love with her on first sight. Though they started dating soon after they met, Sakamoto hadcontinued to work in The Orderduring this time, meaning he was continuing with his assassin duties. As Aoi was morally against what he was doing, even if the people he was killing weren’t innocent, she decided that she would not stay with him unless he left his occupation.
In the second episode of season 1, Aoi throws herself off of a building to make a point to Sakamoto. He immediately follows after her and holds onto her, ensuring that he broke her fall. When they get up from the ground, she tells him that he was terrified of losing her and was willing to do anything to protect her, making the point that he was killing people who would be missed by their family and friends as well. After this incident, Sakamoto decided toimmediately quit working as a hitman, and the two eventually got married and had a child together,Hana.

However, after Sakamoto chose to leave The Order, he was then without a job and had only had experience working as a hitman. He also needs to keep himself in hiding, and likelywouldn’t be able to get a normal job, should they discover his past. Due to this, Aoi suggested building the convenience store that they now both own as a way to make a living together. The store, calledSakamoto’s Store, can be found on the outskirts of Tokyo in a small neighborhood where Sakamoto lives with Aoi and Hana. Their home is found on the second floor above the store.

How Are They Holding Up After Sakamoto’s Retirement?
After Sakamoto and Aoi have their daughter, Hana, Sakamoto begins to change significantly, both physically and morally. He is completely against the work that he used to do, and whenever he needs to protect his family, he uses non-lethal methods. In the past,Sakamoto had worked withShin, a young man who had found himself caught up in the assassin world and had looked up to Sakamoto as inspiration. When Shin returns to attempt to kill Sakamoto, as instructed to him by The Order, he gives up soon after and joins Sakamoto at the store, and becomespart of the family.
Beloved, I know you’re not about to tell me you’ve gone back to killing, right? Because, sweetie, and I know you know this, break the family rules, and I’ll divorce you! — Aoi
Along with Shin,Lu Shaotangeventually shows up as well, becoming a part of the group. Throughout this time, Aoi reminds Sakamoto that there is no killing allowed, unless he wants to get a divorce. Aoi is the only person to scare Sakamoto and make him anxious, as the last thing he wants is to lose her. Though she is initially unaware of the work he has beendoing with Shaotang and Shin, if she were to have discovered it, she would likely be okay with it due to his non-lethal methods. Unfortunately, he must return to this world due to the high bounty placed on his head after he left The Order.
Though this occurrence throws Sakamoto and Aoi’s peaceful life off track, he is stilljust as strong as he was beforeand continues to protect his family to ensure their safety. Sakamoto and Aoi’s relationship is still as strong as ever, and the addition of Shin and Shaotang only enhances the family, as they also follow the rules by ensuring they don’t kill anyone, and they act as great friends to their daughter, Hana. Sakamoto’s family has grown stronger than ever, and Aoi appreciates the protection that he can provide for them to keep their normal and peaceful life.

A 2025 anime, Sakamoto Days is an action-comedy based on Yuto Suzuki’s shonen manga, which debuted in 2020. The series follows Taro Sakamoto, a retired hitman who has been enjoying the family life for years. He spends his days running a small store alongside Shin, but his peaceful existence is regularly interrupted by ghosts of the past.
