Summary

While fans wait forScream 7to finally hit theaters the casting news is coming fast and furiously. Among the people who have joinedScream 7in the last few weeks, the announcement on Thursday is easily one of the most confusing and surprising.

While there aren’t a ton of details known about what the plot forScream 7will be, what is known is that Sidney Prescott is coming back after sitting outScream 6. Not only that but Neve Campbell’s character is bringing her husband along with her. The casting for her husband was one of the first big surprises for this installment of the popular and long running franchise. Many people thought that Sidney’s husband would be played by Patrick Dempsey, as he played a police detective in a previous installment. As it turns out,Joel McHale’s addition to the castis overshadowed on the surprise meter by adding one of the more interesting villains in the franchise.

Scream 7 Welcoming Back Surprising Character

Thursday,Deadlinereported that Scott Foley has been added to the cast of Scream 7. That in and of itself isn’t all that surprising, but the news that he’s slated to reprise the role of Roman Bridger is a bit more of a head-scratcher, considering thatSidney Prescott’s half-brotherwas killed off inScream 3.

Bridger was the main bad guy in Scream 3, doing double duty as the man behind Ghostface in the movie while also working as the director for theStab 3: Return To Woodsboro, the third installment of the in-universe film series that is based on the “real life” murders involving Sidney and her friends.Bridger systematically kills offcast members ofStab 3. Eventually, Roman reveals himself to be the illegitimate son of Maureen Prescott and tells Sidney that he blames her for having a horrible childhood because she left Hollywood and went back to Westboro to start a family with Sid and her father. The sob story doesn’t move Sidney very much, and she, Gale Weathers and Dewey eventually kill him. Including Dewey shooting him in the head.

It’s the finality of Roman Bridger’sdeath that brings up questions as to just how the character can possibly make a return. Granted, he was a filmmaker, so there could be some sort of explanation that his death was faked, though that seems to be a rather big stretch considering the film’s heroes made it clear they knew they needed to verify the killer was dead.

It’s also possible that theScream 7filmmakers have a similar idea to bring him back in the way theybrought back Billy Loomis inScream 5. Rather than actually having a dead character supernaturally return from the grave, he was a hallucination who manifested only to Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter. It’s possible that Roman Bridger could make a cameo appearance inScream 7in the same way, perhaps this time as a hallucination, dream or imaginary character in the mind of Sidney Prescott.
