Summary

ASilent Hill 2fan has shared a very interesting detail about a cutscene with James and Angela that will only be noticed with the game’s music and ambient sounds turned off. Like its predecessor, theSilent Hill 2remake has spurred many players to dissect and inspect every detail of the survival horror title in the hopes of uncovering secrets and answers to questions.

This article contains slight spoilers aboutSilent Hill 2.

Developer Bloober Team seems to have disseminated fascinating tidbits of environmental storytelling throughout the remake that will only be uncovered by those who look beyond the surface. For example, during thecutscene when James encounters Angela Orosco in the cemetery, zooming in on the troubled girl’s hands will uncover heavily bitten fingernails, which serve as an indicator of her mental state.

During that same cutscene, Twitter user Rachel Ashmun discovered a perhaps even more unsettling detail by turning offSilent Hill 2’s ambient noise and music. While talking to James, Angela hears footsteps offscreen and turns toward the sound. Words that most players will believe were spoken to James are in fact directed towards whatever is approaching in the dark. “Please. Please… You shouldn’t be here!” she says tearily before running off in the opposite direction. Those familiar with the story assume that the lurker is one ofSilent Hill 2’s Abstract Daddy monsters, for reasons that become clear while playing.

Who or What Is Lurking in the Dark in Silent Hill 2?

Rachel Ashmun, however, suggests that it perhaps isn’t an Abstract Daddy tormenting Angela during the cutscene. In December, the Twitter user had noticed something else interesting when James is digging up the director’s box in the park. When he stands with it in his hands, he suddenly looks around as if he’s heard something behind him. It might, suggests Rachel, be the same person or thing that was at the cemetery earlier. This would indicate that it’s following James and not Angela.

Despite pessimistic expectations in the leadup to the release of theSilent Hill 2remake, the consensus among players seems to be that Bloober Team did an impressive job overhauling Team Silent’s 2001 classic game. Ifreviews for the remake ofSilent Hill 2are any gauge, this updated version of the psychological survival horror title is set to gather its own cult following for years to come.

And the discoveries don’t only center around James and Angela. Another fan recently shared thatSilent Hill 2features clues about Maria’s tragic storyas well. Reddit’s Rashmunchel (who just happens to be the same Rachel Ashmun) observed that, while James and Maria are talking in the Heaven’s Night club, the reflection of the word KISS above her head says “SICK,” as some of the lines in the neon lettering had burned out, and the EXIT sign over the doorway is in a cage. The characters inSilent Hill 2are beloved, in part due to the relatable demons that haunt each of them, and there’s no telling what other clues about their stories might be discovered as fans peer and poke into every corner of the remake.
