Summary
A member of the development team that worked onThe Simpsons: Tapped Outhas hosted an impromptu Q&A with the community. A number of fans of the mobile title shared their appreciation and questions about the development ofThe Simpsons: Tapped Out.
The Simpsons: Tapped Outhas seen its last day, with the pleas of the communityasking for publisher EA to saveThe Simpsons: Tapped Outor make it game available in a permanent offline format apparently going unanswered. After over a decade of additions to the title, many were terribly upset to see it go. However, it’s likely that the licensing involved, among other issues, made it difficult to make this a reality for fans.

Over on the game’s main subreddit, a developer going by mooseday who worked on the game held an AMA about the game. Outside of showering the dev and their co-workers in appreciation, fans shared a number of questions about the game. The developer expressed that at its peak, there were roughly 120 people working on the game, with only about 20 left by the time the game came to a close. Players asked about datamined content, to which it was revealed that some potential additions were blocked byThe Simpsons' production companyGracie Films, and apparently, even getting the iconic Monorail added to the game was a struggle, both from a development perspective and from a licensing one. The licensing agreement was also whyThe Simpsons: Tapped Outnever came to PC.
The Simpsons: Tapped Out 2 and 3 Were Planned
Another player asked the dev about the lifespan of the game, and whether the team had thoughtThe Simpsons: Tapped Outwould last for 12 years. Mooseday explained that the game was built to “last forever,” but that 32-bit limitations were making its continued development more difficult. This was apparently also behind some interesting bugs with placing roads and water. One fan shared their hope that aTapped Out 2might eventually emerge, to which mooseday made the surprising reveal that aTapped Out 2andTapped Out 3prototypes had been conceived, but they never made it into development. They would have taken a different turn from the first game, withTapped Out 2being a matching game.Tapped Out 3is mysterious, as the dev couldn’t say much, but noted that players would interact with characters, but not through building, like the existing game.
Sadly,The Simpsons: Tapped Outhas now come to a close, and many players will have to adapt after having played it regularly for a decade now. With any luck, another interactive game based onThe Simpsonswill eventually help fill that void, but for now, it’s a sad time for series fans.
