Console players are finally getting the chance to playskate., the highly anticipated new entry in the popularSkatefranchise, thanks to a new round of playtesting. While such tests have been ongoing forskate.since mid-2022, they’ve been limited to just its PC version, with Xbox and PlayStation players now able to get a taste of the firstSkategame since about 15 years.
The last game to release for theSkatefranchise wasSkate 3in 2010. Despite having a stalwart fanbase, the franchise was seemingly indefinitely shelved by EA in favor of more FPS, Battle Royale, and live-service titles. Support for a newSkatetitle remained throughout the years, however, with #Skate4 becoming a hashtag that even EA couldn’t continue to ignore, culminating in the announcement of a dedicated development studio to make a new game in the series. Last Fall, it was announcedskate.would go into early accessin 2025, with console testing certainly a positive development towards that window.

Announced viaskate.’s official Twitter account, Xbox and PlayStation console players should now be able to playtestskate., albeit through the developer’sskate.Insider program, which requires registration. In a short video clip, a pair of people fromskate.’s development team, seemingly answering a few questions from fans. While the clip doesn’t address any specific gameplay features, like thepatented new and improved replay editor, they confirmed there will be more Black hairstyle options, as well as cheekily responding about the playtest initially announced for “Fall 2024.”
Confirmed by EA to be a free-to-play, live-service game, public information on exactly whatskate.entails remains somewhat unclear. What is known is that the skateboarding sim takes place in the fictional city of San Vansterdam, a city still under construction that takes inspiration from San Vanelona and Port Carverton in addition to real-world locations. A version ofskate.’s map leaked onlinein 2023, although it stands to reason it could have vastly changed in the time since. Fans of the series can either register for the playtest, or hold out longer untilskate.becomes more easily accessible.

While slated to enter early access in 2025, gamers know all too well that an in-development title may get delayed past initial window announcements, as has become somewhat commonplace in the industry.
