In season 1 ofSquid Game, viewers were taken into the world of the Games, where participants had to complete a variety of mini-games in order to keep their lives and win a large sum of money at the end. There were a lot of popular, traditional games featured in the first season, including Ddjaki, Red Light, Green Light, and much more.
In the second season, fans were introduced to a few new games, some originating as traditional Korean children’s games, while others came from different countries around the world. As always, the games given to participants are much more difficult than they seem, and players will need to be successful in order to keep their lives. Here are all the new games featured in season 2 ofSquid Game, and how they are played.
Russian Roulette
The Recruiter’s Twisted Game
Although Russian Roulette is not featured in the titular Games, The Recruiter uses it when meeting with Gi-hun at the beginning of the second season. Gi-hun is able to find The Recruiter after searching for him for a while for a chance to return to the Games orget to talk to the Front Man. Surprisingly, the game of Russian Roulette ends in The Recruiter taking his own life.
The game of Russian Roulette usually features two players, and requires a revolver with six chambers loaded with one bullet. The cylinder of the revolver is spun before playing to randomize where the loaded bullet is located. As the players take turns, they hold the revolver to their head and pull the trigger. If there is no bullet in the chamber, they survive, and the players keep taking turns until one of them takes a bullet.
Rock, Paper, Scissors Minus One
Another Game From The Recruiter
Rock, Paper, Scissors Minus One is another game that exists outside the competition inthe popularSquid Gameseries, and is given by The Recruiter. It is a twist on the well-known Rock, Paper, Scissors, and is given to Mr. Kim and Choi Woo-seok, who are employees of Gi-hun and are actively searching for The Recruiter. However, they become captured, and are forced to play the sadistic game.
Rock, Paper, Scissors is a common game that almost everybody is aware of. This game involves players counting to three, and choosing to form their hand into one of three shapes: rock, paper, or scissors. Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, and paper beats rock. For Rock, Paper, Scissors Minus One, The Recruiter adds a few new rules: the “minus one”, where the players create a shape using both of their hands, but then they have to subtract one of them from play.
Flying Stone
Simple, But Difficult
Flying Stone is the second game featured during theSix-Legged Pentathlon, requiring five players to stay tied together as they move on to the next children’s mini-game. Each game has a designated team member that must complete it, with the other players being assigned to one of the other games.
To play Flying Stone, the player needs to knock over one vertical stone on the ground with another stone in their hand. They need to be at least 10 feet away from the stone on the ground, otherwise, they will be immediately disqualified. While the rules are quite simple, the game is difficult to master, as aremany of the games in season 2.
Gong-gi
Similar to the Game of Jacks
Gong-gi is a traditional Korean game, and is one of the most difficult featured in season 2. It is played as the third game during the Six-Legged Pentathlon, and iscompleted by Dae-ho successfullyon Gi-hun’s team. He is able to easily finish the game due to muscle memory, having often played the game with his sisters when he was younger.
To play Gong-gi, players will need 5 small, flat stones that are around the size of a marble. Whoever plays will start with all the stones on the ground scattered. Then, with one hand, they will throw one stone up into the air and pick up another from the ground, and repeat until all five have been caught. Then, they will start over and pick up two stones at a time, then three, and so on. For the fourth section, they will need to throw one stone up and drop four, then throw the stone in the air again and pick up all four. Finally, they will want to throw all five in the air and catch them in the back of their hand, and then again, and catch them in their palm.
Spinning Top
Requires Precise Strategies
Spinning Top is the fourth game during the Six-Legged Pentathlon, and is played by Player 044, Seon-nyeo, on-screen. Though she struggles to complete the game at first, she is able to finish after Player 120, Hyun-ju, helps her through. Player 001 in Gi-hun’s team purposefully fails in the game at first, due to hishidden identity as theFront Man, attempting to throw off Gi-hun’s plans.
To play Spinning Top, all the player needs is to get a string and a spinning top, and tie the string along the base of the top. Then, they need to throw the top forward with the string, fast enough so that it lands on the ground and begins to spin. There is no amount of time that it needs to spin for; just as long as it touches the ground and spins, the player is successful.
Jegi
Similar to Hacky Sack
Jegi is another traditional Korean children’s game, and is played as the fifth and final game in the Six-Legged Pentathlon. It is played by Player 333, Myung-gi, with ease, despite being tied to 4 other players.
The game of Jegi is quite simple, similar to Flying Stone. All the player needs to do is kick the hacky sack toy given to them in the air five times in a row. Though the rules are simple, it is especially difficult to master, especially when the player is tied to others during the Six-Legged Pentathlon.
Mingle
Deadly Merry-Go-Round
Mingle is thethird gameplayed during the Squid Games, and is completely different from the Six-Legged Pentathlon games featured previously. While the Six-Legged Pentathlon featured games that brought groups together, Mingle has playersturning on each otherin order to survive.
In the game of Mingle, players are placed on what looks like a merry-go-round. Similar to the game of Musical Chairs, the merry-go-round has music playing which eventually stops. From here, the players are required to get a specific number of players according to the rules, and take them to one of the fifty rooms in the area. Players who are unsuccessful in finding a team or go to the wrong number will be killed. It continues for 5 rounds, until one team remains. There will most likely be many new deadly games as well featured in thethird season, set to premiere in 2025.
