Summary
Squid Gamewill return for its final run in Season 3. It will also bring back several important characters noticeably missing in Season 2.
Squid Gamewas a massive hit when it was released on Netflix in 2021. After three years, the streaming giant dropped its sequel,Squid GameSeason 2, and fans loved it. It was another success, but many noticed some important personalities were missing. A new teaser forSquid GameSeason 3 confirms the return of these characters.
An early preview image forSquid GameSeason 3featured the Front Man with a view of the VIPs in the background, ScreenRant reported. The photo circulated online, with one sharing it on X, formerly Twitter. “Squid game season 3 is coming soon and I am excited! First of all the VIP’s are making a return, second of all Hwang Jun-ho probably found the land of Squid Games, third of all the person who is inside that coffin I’m suggesting it’s jung- bae,” the fanwrote. The VIPs are a group of wealthy and masked elites. They appeared in the first season, Episode 7 titled “VIPs.” They were portrayed as cruel and indifferent figures because they bet on the deadly games for entertainment. They are easy to spot because they wear golden animal masks and are surrounded by staffers who tend to their needs.
Series showrunner and director Hwang Dong-hyukdescribed the VIPs as “the power elite, the global CEOs.” He also compared President Donald Trump to the controversial characters. “Donald Trump became the president of the United States, and I think he kind of resembles one of the VIPs in the Squid Game. It’s almost like he’s running a game show, not a country, like giving people horror. After all these issues happened, I thought it was about time that this show goes out into the world,“the filmmaker said. The VIPs' appearance in the series was criticized due to bad dialogue and over-the-top acting, making them the weakest parts of the hit South Korean survival thriller. They were noticeably missing inSquid GameSeason 2. With the recent photo, it suffices to say that the VIPs are returning in the final season.
The VIPs are essential in theSquid Gamestory and their absence in the second season is noticeable. Season 2 features Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) return to the game and gives us a glimpse of how the rebellion he started ends up for everyone. Since the plot will continue in Season 3, it’s high time for the VIPs to return because they are key figures in the story. Many were not satisfied with their acting and dialogue in Season 1. Hopefully, they will be reintroduced in the final season with better writing. They should be portrayed as menacing and sophisticated since they are significant in the survival of the life-or-death games, which based on the series have been going on for years. Since Gi-hun is determined to end the game, he needs access to the VIPs, and this is something that fans look forward to seeing in the final season. It remains unclear how this will happen and if it will happen, but with Gi-hun’s goal of taking down everyone behind the competition, the VIPs are certainly part of the endgame. Good thing fans will soon witness the end of the story because the final season iscoming “sooner than you expect,“according to the director.
