Summary
Squid Gamefans couldn’t get enough of the second season and are already looking forward to its next run. Its creator and director gave a positive update aboutSquid GameSeason 3’s release date.
Squid Gamewas a massive success when it was released on Netflix in 2021. After three years, on June 30, 2025, the second season dropped and it was as successful. However, many felt it suddenly ended after seven episodes and ardent fans couldn’t wait for Season 3 because the last season ended with a major cliffhanger.Squid Gamecreator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk assured fans that the final season would not take that long.
Squid GameSeason 2was nominated for Best Television Series-Drama at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards in December. The nomination raised eyebrows because the list of nominees was released before the second season of the hit Korean psychological action thriller came out on Netflix. Many wondered whySquid GameSeason 2 made it into the list. However, the award voters were reportedly given early access to the series' second season. Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter got a hold of Dong-hyuk and Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun, aka Player 456, in the series, at the 2025 Golden Globes red carpet. The director was asked when the show would return to the streamer, and Dong-hyuk debunked rumors that Season 3 would drop in May. However, he hinted that it could return earlier. “I don’t think it’s May, but it will come out this year,"…the filmmaker said while smiling before adding, “It’s coming, it’s coming. I’m working on it. It’s coming soon. Sooner than you’d expect.”
Dong-hyuk’s favorable response aboutSquid GameSeason 3is not surprising because he previously said that they were already in the post-production for the final season. According to him, they worked on the second and third seasons simultaneously. So, it’s likely that they are already done withSquid GameSeason 3 or only minimal work is needed to finish it. “I wrote seasons two and three at the same time, and we were in production for both simultaneously, and currently we are in the post-production process for Season 3,“he said in December. Dong-hyuk also explained whySeason 2 was shorter, with only seven episodescompared to nine from Season 1. Apparently, the story will continue in Season 3, and he cut the story after Episode 7 because it was a “big turning point or inflection point.” “I had [the] first seven episodes as Season 2 and then the rest of Season 3,” he shared.
Squid Gamefans waited for three years for its second season to drop. Considering that Season 2 left the viewers on the edge of their seats, it’s just right to release Season 3 months from now because everyone can still feel the hype and momentum.Squid GameSeason 2 left Gi-hun with a devastating loss after he ignited a revolution against the people behind the fatal game. The Front Man shoots his best friend Jung-bae (Lee See-hwan) in front of him but leaves him alive, crying and grieving. Jung-jaeinitially questioned the “bold” cliffhanger endingof Season 2. However, he teased thatSquid GameSeason 3 will answer fans' lingering questionsabout the show.
Squid GameSeason 2 is now streaming on Netflix and Season 3 will be released this year.
