Summary
TheFar Cryfranchise began in 2004, now spanning six mainline series entries, multiple DLC’s, and the spin-offFar Cry: Primal, amassing millions of units sold. The latest entry into the series,Far Cry 6, followed a revolution in the fictional Carribean Island, Yuba, with players tasked with taking down the vicious dictator, Antón Castillo, played by Giancarlo Esposito. As is the staple of theFar Cryfranchise, players are forced to use guerrilla tactics to overthrow the big bad waiting for them at the end, whilst taking down their subordinates along the way.
Far Cry 6received mixed reviews upon its release, with many praising the high-octane action, but the lack of congruence between the story of the game and the action of the player creates a problem theFar Cryseries has been facing for a number of entries. With all this said, it’s surely not too long beforeFar Cry 7is due to be announced, so what should be changed fromFar Cry 6?

7The Charming Villain
Since Far Cry 3, Despite Villains Being Outright Evil, They’ve Been Consistently Charismatic
WhenFar Cry 3introduced the world to Vaas Montenegro, the entire franchise stood to change, creating a scenery-chewing, enigmatic villain who players couldn’t get enough of, despite not being the games ultimate antagonist.TheFar Cryformula was forever changed with each subsequent entry in the franchise featuring a similar big bad.Far Cry 6continued this method with the casting of quintessential bad guy Giancarlo Esposito, famous for his work as Gustavo Fring in Breaking Bad.
The main issueFar Cry 6faced was that players didn’t get enough time with this villain, largely sticking to the background and being a constant looming unseen threat. WithFar Cry 7,this threat should be more direct, having the villain front and center and interacting more frequently with our protagonist. It’s a subtle change to formula but one that would definitely improve the quality ofFar Cry 7.
6The Ammo System
Far Cry 6’s Ammo System Provides A Few Headaches For Seasoned Players
WhenFar Cry 6released, players were tolddifferent types of rounds would be more effective for taking down specific enemies, a slight change to formula but something that players could use to tweak their play style slightly for more effective guerrilla tactics.
What actually transpired was manyplayers resulted in just using armor piercing rounds, as they proved to be the most effective on most enemies without needing to scope out each area stealthily to find which ammo type suited each enemy. The idea in principle is great, but for it to be effective, the player would need to plan carefully and slow down, whereasFar Cry 6wants to keep the tempo high. The ammo system could use a few tweaks beforeFar Cry 7to strike the right balance and not slow the game down.
5Variety In Yara
Far Cry 6 Didn’t Offer Enough Variety In Its Huge Open World
Being the sixth mainline entry into theFar Cryfranchise and the first to be released on the latest console generation, players expected a big open-world teeming with life and activities to complete.
However, as has been the issue for players with most otherFar Crygames, the game becomes far too repetitive, far too quickly, with some areas of the map being dogged by anti-aircraft weaponry to limit exploration until the player reaches a high enough level. And even then, when it comes to finally exploring these areas, many are found to be largely devoid of new ideas, with scattered FND Bases to take care of and treasure to find. On the whole, the game feels repetitive and a bit empty.Far Cry 7needs to shake this up by adding variety to its open-world settingto give players a reason to explore, rather than it being a tickbox exercise.
4Bring Back Manual Saving
Far Cry 6 Only Used Autosaves On One Save File
Maybe this isn’t the biggest issue facing theFar Cryfranchise, but not allowing players to have a manual save file is a perplexing decision, to say the least.Far Cry 6implemented an autosave only system that was confined to a singular save file.
This becomes an issue if players want to reload from a previous point, if, for example, they’ve made a mistake or would like to try a different way of completing an objective, allowing them to backtrack if they need to. It’s a glaring omission fromFar Cry 6and should definitely make a return toFar Cry 7.
3A Change Of Scenery
Changing The Location For Far Cry 7 Could Provide A Welcome Change
The core foundation of theFar Crygames, alongside its first-person action, are its beautiful open-worlds. From the stunning Himalaya’s ofFar Cry 4to the mountains and lakes ofFar Cry 5’sMontana. One thing’s for certain:Far Crygames know how to make an open-world beautiful and Yara inFar Cry 6is no exception.
However, Yara, in a lot of ways, being a tropical island under the rule of a dictator, harks back to the open-world of 2012’sFar Cry 3. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, asFar Cry 3is an incredible game, but it does give the feeling that the franchise could be becoming repetitive and stale. Under this notion, one change that theFar Crydevelopers could beFar Cry 7’ssetting and location, switching things up for a more compact experience. With Esperanza inFar Cry 6,the team explored the idea of bringing a huge city to aFar Cry game.Maybe expanding on this idea could lead to a whole new adventure and give the franchise a welcome change forFar Cry 7.
1The Rumored Time Limit Feature
Rumors regarding Far Cry 7 Have Mentioned A Time Limit To The Game
WIthinFar Cry 6, players are afforded time to explore Yara’s open world at their own pace, exploring every nook and cranny to complete every objective. However, it’s been rumored thatFar Cry 7will feature a time limit, with players being thrust into a make-or-break situation.
This could be the breath of fresh air that the franchise needs, conveying the back against the wall narrative in a new and exciting way for the franchise. It won’t be to everyone’s taste, but when it comes to making changes to the pre-existingFar Cryformula, adding a time limit could mark a bold change forFar Cry 7.
