Summary
Project GG, the upcoming superhero title fromPlatinumGames, has been removed from the developer’s website, leaving fans to wonder if the intriguing project has been canceled. PlatinumGames is well known for its stylish action titles likeBayonetta,Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, andNier: Automata. Even before he helped foundPlatinumGamesin 2006, Hideki Kamiya had his own pedigree with classic Capcom titles likeDevil May Cry,Viewtiful Joe, andOkami. Under Platinum, Kamiya helped create high-octane titles likeAstral Chain,World of Demons, and the previously mentionedBayonettaseries.
Although Hideki Kamiya left PlatinumGames to reform Clover Studio in 2023, he and the developer he helped create had at least one more project in the works, tentatively titledProject GG. It was first announced in 2020 with a trailer and premise seemingly inspired byUltraman: a superhero transforms into a giant to battle monsters that threaten a ruined city. PlatinumGames stated thatProject GGwill be the third chapter in an apparent “hero trilogy” from Kamiya alongsideViewtiful Joeand 2013’sThe Wonderful 101.
Interested gamers have been givenvery few updates aboutProject GGsince its initial announcement, and a new development has some worried that it might not come out at all. Former PlatinumGames producer Jean Pierre Kellams pointed out that the officialPlatinumGames webpagewas recently updated to remove references to 13 of its titles, including the ill-fated live-service gameBabylon’s FallandProject GG. It should be noted that web pages for many of the removed games are still active, but the former URL forProject GGnow simply redirects to the PlatinumGames homepage.
Project GG Seemingly Removed from PlatinumGames Website
Kellams expressed disappointment in these removals, accusing PlatinumGames of “erasing its history” and saying that he felt insulted as someone who worked on many of the removed titles.Project GGin particular has been cast into question ever sinceHideki Kamiya announced his departure from PlatinumGamesin late 2023, and he would go on to state that he regrets not being able to see the ambitious project through to completion.
More recently, Kamiya and the revived Clover Studio announced that it is developinga long-awaitedOkamisequelduring The Game Awards 2024 back in December, a development that seems to have greatly overshadowedProject GG. Meanwhile,PlatinumGamesis working with Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja onNinja Gaiden 4, which was announced during last month’s Xbox Developer Direct and is set to release in fall 2025.
