Throughout the series ofOne Piece, there have been tons of incredibly smart and intelligent characters. From the massive genius of Vegapunk to the horrific augmentation of his children performed by Vinsmoke Judge, although rarely in a pivotal role, these highly intelligent characters are always interesting to see. Overall, it’s fairly clear, however, that by far, the smartest character in the world ofOne Piece, is the scientist Vegapunk, who can do virtually anything as long as it’s linked somehow to the foundations of science.
Although picking the smartest character inOne Pieceis fairly easy, choosing the smartestOne Piecepirate is a completely different issue. Overall, there are many extremely intelligent pirates that currentlyroam the landscape ofOne Piece. However, these characters rarely possess traditional book smarts and scientific knowledge. Still, there are a few pirates that many fans could consider to be the smartest inOne Piece.

This article will only cover pirates. Characters affiliated with the World Government or non-affiliated characters won’t be considered.
What Makes A Smart Pirate In One Piece?
Well-Rounded Intelligence With Both Book Smarts And Street Smarts
Intelligence, especially in the world ofOne Piece,is a hard trait to quantify. While a character may be incredibly well-read and a scientific genius, when it comes to common sense or conversation skills, they are completely lost. For that reason,an intelligent character inOne Piececan’t just be good at their specific niche and needs to be incredibly well-rounded overall. Despite this, however, even with this rudimentary definition of what could constitute the “smartest pirate,” in the end, it’s a matter of opinion.

Additionally, the smartest pirate of the series has to be acurrently active pirate inOne Piece. Deceased characters and those who were once pirates and are now no longer pirates don’t count officially as pirates. For that reason, characters like Caesar will not be considered for this article, though it’s unlikely he would be the smartest pirate anyway.
Franky And Crocodile Are Both Incredibly Smart
Each is Intelligent In Their Specific Niche
Firstly, although his knowledge is incredibly hyper-specific, Franky is up there as one of the smartest characters in the entire series.TheOne Pieceshipwright Franky, when it comes to engineering and science, is incredibly smart. However, his knowledge also extends to other scientific fields as well. Franky was able to construct massive mechs, understand and replicate Vegapunk’s technology, and, most impressively, reconstruct his body as a cyborg after suffering a near-fatal injury. This alone is enough to make Franky’s intelligence legendary, though when it comes to fields outside of science, the cyborg is a bit lost. For this reason, Franky, sadly, is far from being the smartest pirate inOne Piece.
Next, although he was defeated at the hands ofthe protagonist ofOne Piece, Luffy, it’s nearly impossible to deny the extreme levels of strategic intelligence that Crocodile possesses. Orchestrating a war from the shadows of Alabasta, all while being praised as the nation’s hero, is one of the greatest plans aOne Piecevillain has had thus far. Additionally, the character basically runs the Cross Guild from the shadows, acting as the brains of the operation, and is currently a Chief Officer. Paired with his charisma, Crocodile may have the best strategic planning out of any pirate

Robin May Be The Smartest Pirate In One Piece
A Genius From A Young Age Who Constantly Pursues Knowledge
Finally, however, the most well-rounded and arguably the most intelligent pirate istheOne PieceStraw Hat, Nico Robin. Teaching herself a dead language as a child, Robin has always been a genius. Although the field of history is far less impressive than science, Robin excels in her field so much that she becomes one of the greatest threats to the world ofOne Piece.Besides her skills in history and archeology, Robin also has a very strategic mind and a good knowledge of many different fields.
When all I want is to learn of a history, there are too many enemies within my dream. - Robin
In the end, although the idea of intelligence is completely subjective, Robin is a strong candidate forthe smartest pirate inOne Piece. However, as more information about other characters, like Ben Beckman, is revealed, there may be more competition for this title. However, until then, Robin’s incredible intellect, adaptability, and genius make her hard to surpass inOne Piece.
