One of the things that makes games likeCivilization VIIso popular is the way thatthey let players build their own towns and citiesand govern them however they see fit. For better or worse, this can often lead to some really unique outcomes, while also providing the player with a sense of ownership and fulfillment that few other games can match.

Unfortunately, at launch, there is no way to change the name of a town or city inCiv 7, much to the dismay of many players. There’s arguably a good reason for this, although those who really want to rename theirCivilization VIIsettlements have cause to be optimistic, as there’s a strong possibility that the functionality will be coming to the game sooner rather than later.

As of Title Update 1.1.1, players can rename their towns and cities by navigating to the settlement menu and clicking on the pencil icon or pressing the R3 (PlayStation) or RS (Xbox) button. This method can also be used to rename Commander units.

Can You Rename Towns and Cities in Civ 7?

One ofthe biggest changes inCiv 7is the ability to switch civilizations each time a new age begins. When doing so, the name of the player’s settlements will sometimes change to match their new civ. As such, it is technically possible for players to influence the new names of their settlements through their choices. However, players are unable to manually rename theirCiv 7settlementslike they could in previous installments.

Will the Ability to Change Civ 7 Settlement Names Come in a Future Update?

As series fans will no doubt remember, the ability to renameCivilization VIsettlements was patched into the game post-release, so there’s still hope that the functionality will be coming toCiv 7at some point. Indeed, the ability to choose a name for newCivilization VIIreligionswas added to the game right at the last minute, andthe devs have confirmed that they will continue to add fan-requested features toCiv 7in future updates.

Given thatfans started a petition asking for the ability to renameCiv 7cities back in January, it seems safe to assume that this will be fairly high on Firaxis' agenda. Even if it isn’t, though, modders will likely find a way to do it fairly quickly, so for those who just can’t wait to start changing the names of theirCivilization VIIsettlements, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on popular modding sites like Nexus Mods, as if the devs don’t add the functionality,aCiv 7city rename mod will appear online sooner rather than later.
